Each player has a team of two fighters, and players can switch their characters at any time, perform two special moves simultaneously, utilize familiar fighting mechanics like the variable assist and hyper variable combination attacks, and execute new techniques such as the Mega Crash. Minigames also abound, and the game has an option for a simplified control scheme, but it also supports the Classic and GameCube controllers.

Not only does attack power rise when the gauge is full, but the player can also use a special technique that can break the opponent's weapon and force the opponent to fight unarmed. The game also allows for more movement techniques such as back-stepping, rushing forward and ducking, allowing for even more strategies.
