Battle.Net has been free since they launched it with the original Diablo in 1997 - I highly doubt they will start making it a pay service now. It's not like Blizzard is hurting for money, and fans of their games have come to expect the Battle.Net services as part of the over all game price.

It's free through Battle.net, but Diablo runs really strange through Vista even in Compatibility mode.
