When Video Game Design Becoes Art
Since its introduction on the Playstation, and with each sequel, the Metal Gear Solid series has marked its place in history as something completely innovative and truly unique. Whether you love or hate the storyline, there is no denying that Hideo Kojima has mastered the art of Game Design. But between greatly evolving characters, a complex story, and a gameplay system that borders on perfect, Metal Gear Solid 4 (the best in the series) stands alone as one of the very few games that is truly art. Be it Kojima's take at cinematography and narrative or the gameplay elements he (and his team) incorporate, one thing is certain, this game portrays a kind of love that is seldom seen in Game Development.
This game is not just for the fans, or the curious either. It is for anyone who enjoys a great story. From Snake's first appearance as an aging, almost defeated war veteran to his final encounter with Big Boss, MGS4 has what most games lack. It truly has heart. The game has a soul, and it demands your love and attention. Do not fear the extended cut scenes that many despised. They are very entertaining and help seal many of the loose loops in the series' story. Not only that, they also add to the overall feel of a cinematographic experience, what Hideo Kojima envisioned for his game. As a gamer, you owe it to yourself to play this game. Even if you skip the cut scenes, you will be treated to one of the best gaming experiences of all time.
