Gears of War - Xbox 360

Gears of War: Emergence Day

The wait is finally over! Gears of War comes out near the launch of the Ps3 and Wii and boy does Microsoft have an edge. Where SONY had GTA and God of War, and Nintendo has Mario, Zelda, and Metriod Prime...Microsoft not only has Halo but now has Gears of War. Tell me if im wrong, but is Gears of War better than Halo? Interesting question. Anywayz, on to Gears of War. The game is a sci-fi shooter with horror elements. You play as Marcus Fenix who is named as a traitor and released from jail to fight the Locust Horde....and thats about all you will get to know. Now stop this whining-like-a-baby and get to it soldier! The beginning of the game does not tell any story to what has been going on and you know what? THANK GOD IT DOESNT. Just like in real life, get out of prison and suit up in uniform no questions asked! Go straight into the fight and fend off the Locust to survive. This perspective of story-telling (basically no story telling..sweet!) is great because it makes you feel as if you are fighting for your life and your squads life. You dont know what the hell is going on! Besides not even the soldiers in Sera know who the Locusts are! Now on to the game itself! The gameplay is unique. Hide behind cover or get blown to bits. No more kiddy run and gun games. You better duck and think fast because the AI is very, very impressive. They act just like what other people will do! The hide, move around, flank you, and kill you! Its all about cover, just like in real life. And if you dont believe me, just ask army officials and they will tell you. The graphics are amazing with everything around you looking like wartorn zones and the sign of a great city that once flourished in the lands. The camera angle works to perfection and creates intense moments when the fight is fierce. The controller too doesnt let down, as buttons are easy to figure out. Playing this game was sooooo much fun! The sound is great with fire all around you, the music playing when fighting, and the orders being shouted out by your teammates. Everything about this game is perfect. The single-player experience was phenomenal. Everyone says that it was too short, but i think otherwise. People forget that the game isnt supposed to be judged on longetivity, but more on uniqueness and how much fun it is. Sure it is moderate on casual mode.....but have you tried insane on single-player? I think not. Its more rewarding when you beat the game in its hardest difficulty. The multiplayer is another story...and I think is better than Halo's because people cannot just "camp" or be cheap with one weapon, because there are weapons that counter other weapons. Who ever said bringing a knife is a bad idea going into a gun fight never considered the chainsaw. These mulitplayer modes are crazy...especially executioner mode! All in all GOW is in my opinion a game that revolutionizes how gaming should be done. For me, it is just a little bit better than my previous "best game of all time" which was Resident Evil 4. GOW was fun, smart, wickedly funny, scary, nasty, easy-to-master the controls, but best of all the story seemed so realistic and so attractive...so attractive that it mirrors our civilization in a way! This game is THAT GOOD! I give it a 5 out of 5.

FIFA Soccer 07 - Xbox 360

The fans may be called the 12th man, but the ball is the 13th.

No more playing the FIFA World Cup 2006 version on your Xbox 360 because this fall FIFA recieves a new facelift. That right, all new mechanics. What the playmaking system has done for both Madden and the March Madness series, EA has given FIFA an actual ball. Players no longer just stride down the field and score a ball with a through pass down the field that your players will automatically make. This time around the ball recieves a new physics engine and the gameplay engine makes the game more fun to play. The goals in other FIFA games were sometimes outrageous and now you will find at most (if your very, very, verylucky) only 5 goals. Players who crash onto other players will recoil and the ball will just go its merry way until another player touches it. The ball is the 13th man because now you have to take care of it. Want to be Christiano Ronaldo and run down the field and score a goal? Not working. Team is the concept now and your teammates are the key to victory. The only downside is that EA didnt polish the AI and you will often find your players making kiddy mistakes, especially your goalie. He will just stand there when the ball is only 5 feet away, but he does make it up with spectacular save after save. The create a player is well done, but I would have liked it if they implemented the Superstar mode like Madden does. That way you can give your player the chance to become the best unlike the manager mode. The player growth is a nice concept and keeps you playing as you strive to make your team the best. Although there are not as many teams as the current consoles hold, I believe you can download more leagues in the future, but dont quote me on that. Another feature is that the waiting screen has you playing one on one against a goalie. Think of it as a Saint's Row version of waiting, it actually gives you something to do! The EA Trax is present as well. Having 40 songs from around the world, one song will certainly find your taste, but it is not as strong as the FIFA World Cup 2006 in my opinion. All in all, FIFA Soccer 2007 for the Xbox 360 is a leap forward for EA. Fans will love the new system because it feels more real and when you score that goal, you will certainly feel as if you really made that goal. Trust me it will put a smile on your face. Although there are AI problems and the absent of some teams as well as not supporting the create a player mode with a sort of Superstar concept. Aside from those minor flaws, this game is the best soccer game yet....I cannot wait how next year's FIFA Soccer game is going to turn out. For now, lets play some Futbol!

World of Warcraft - PC

The world that is still Warcraft

Blizzard, Blizzard, Blizzard. Oh how I love your games. Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo, and now this? These people are geniuses indeed and make the best out of any game. Players can feel immersed in the game and get on the go. Lvl grinding is easy and the quests are somewhat fun. What i didnt like this game that made me give it a 4.75 (trust me its so small that if it gave me the chance to rate it 4.999999 i wouldve done it) is the fact that the way you start was very...bleak. It didnt throw into the large cities and into the middle of society as other games do. This makes you feel as if ur someone who isnt connected to the world already. O well, this game is still great. Although i reached only level 12 in one month (im in college, IM SORRY!) it was pretty easy and very straight-forward. I wouldve loved to have more friends involved and have big parties...but sometimes kids were involved and...well didnt care about others...but thats life. You find them everyone so it didnt matter. Still it is a great game, no wonder it has had soo much success. Graphics are great for the kind of story telling, armor, customization (although not as good as EQ2), weapons, and most of all community....becuase of sooo many players this game is pretty easy to get fit into the right group. Happy hours spending your life playing this game!

Warhammer 40,000: Dark Crusade - PC

Warhammer...the originators of mutli-class mayhem

Believe me guys, Warhammer has been out since the 1980's. These people are no strangers to story-telling and gut wrenching warfare. This game has 7, count them 7 races! Each are unique and make the best of their abilities. Following the same mechanics used in the two previous games it spices up the 40,000k universe with new mission story-telling and new units that gives each race a reason to play with. Want to play with the Imperial Gaurd? Just dish out the tanks and men and prepare to overrun the enemy. The Tau? Make a small, but powerful force of technological soldiers and take them out when they arent looking. The Necrons? With only one resource, start slow but if your enemies make the dear mistake of letting you live they will pay with their keyboards slamming the ground once you have your invincible army standing. This game is outstanding. Although the gamers know they will have another game after this (remember they are missing the tyranids), we will have time to play this game until we see each races ending. Graphics are still great, the sound makes you want to go outside and assemble little kids into making armies and fighting each other, and the PC is great for RTS's. The only thing I am waiting for is the ability to create heroes by cusomization or heroes in the actualy stories and putting more of the Warhammer 40,000k story into effect, such as Abaddon the Despoiler or the Ork invasions of Armegeddon. If your not familiar, trust me you will be hooked to this game. Overall this game is not only an Expansion Pack, but also a game that revitalizes the Warhammer RTS genre.

EverQuest II - PC

Everquest 2: Just a late reminder

Just as the MMORPG era begins, SOE comes out with quite an impressive game. Everquest 2 is set about 500 years after EQ1. Being an newbie to this whole MMORPG thing, i was quickly hooked with the storyline and how well the customization options were. You could make your character look so unique that you will never find the player with the same features. The gameplay is great and the exp grind is appropraite for this game and makes you feel as if you really earned it, unlike diablo2 (although that was a great game also). Armor, classes, weapons, levels, maps, and the music were all unique in their own way and really sets this franchise apart from the others. Dont get me wrong, every other MMORPG deserves great credit, but to differentiate EQ2 from WOW, EQ2 is more for MMORPG veterans and the ones who take it seriously with many more mature players while WOW is more for the player who doesnt have much time and involves more kids playing (trust me i know, getting stabbed in the back repeatedly in WOW by kids was expected). That doesnt make the game look bad though, its just players around the world giving their taste of fun to others. Arguably, this game is great with many great features. Graphics are beautiful and the players in it gives me the impression that this game is taken seriously as a profession which feels cool because you know your playing with people who actually care. All in all, its all about the people playing in it, but the game deserves much great credit. Great job SOE.
