The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - GameCube

Is Link back?

It's pint-sized Link! And cel-shaded graphics! ....It's not bad. It's a great game... but honestly it didn't blow me away, it was just fun. The Wind Waker is sort of a sequel to OoT, but please don't try and follow the plot. It felt like they were recycling a lot. Don't be mislead by thinking it is an all new-adventure, because it is very close to OoT in some ways. It's just... some of the dungeons later in the game aren't anything to write home about. I love the combat. It's actually pretty violent, but they did a decent job of making it "OK" for the kids. There is one part in the game, when you get the Master Sword and you have to fight almost a small army... it's incredible. Using the boat is an innovation, but tedious at the same time. I'd advise taking a nap inbetween traveling to your next destination in the ocean...

Onimusha: Warlords - PS2

Part I of a great trilogy.

Onimusha: Warlords is a first-generation PS2 game, one of the best. It takes RE's forumla, sort of, but mixes it heavily in eastern-themes. The RE comparisons can stop right there because this game is pretty far from it. Aside from the pre-rendered backgrounds and control scheme, but we're talking about Capcom, afterall. It's more of an action/adventure game, you use mostly blades, and there's another character you play with at a few parts. What I really liked were the graphics... The opening FMV alone gets you psyched. Nice graphics with a kind of typical plot, though. There are a few suprises here and there, and I think Capcom did a good job. For it's price, it's a good buy. It's not a long game by any means, but it does have it's challenging parts that you'll either love or hate.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay - Xbox

Not only redemption for Vin Diesel, but licensed games as a whole.

CoR is a game by Starbreeze & Tigon studios, and VU games. It's based on the upcoming movie of similar name. A prequel of sorts to this movie, and Pitch Black, we get to see into the past of the anti-hero, uncovering some mysteries, like his eyes. You may have noticed it's primarly first-person. You even have melee fights taking place in first-person, and it is truly the best first-person fighting system ever made. Interesting though, that you'll be using your hands and fists more than guns in this game. While it is short on weapons, it has several different melee weapons, too. Another addition is it is an 'adventure' hybrid... you interact with other NPC's, even enemies sometimes, and you may do jobs for them for rewards, and your character's life gauage even improves throughout the course of the game. And finally, it is a first-person stealth game, too. What's great is that it mixes simplicity with the feeling of it being less linear... you have a CHOICE to break someones neck. There are so many ways to murder someone it's disturbing. Technically, this game has about any other console game thus far this year, beaten soundly. The graphics are very close to that of Doom III, the graphical juggernaut. It uses a similar engine, by 'normal mapping'. I don't need to tell you how it works, just know this game has some of the best graphics you have ever seen, and that is no lie. Screens and movies don't do it justice. The sound is also flawless, more akin to that of a blockbuster movie. The game itself is fun to play. There are no tedious parts, and any 'casual' gamer can play through it in about 10 hours or less. There's a lot of things to go back to, and CoR has many memorable moments that you will love to come back to... but this game is not for those of weak stomachs. I guarantee you won't see a better licensed game this year.

Metroid: Zero Mission - GBA

The Hunter makes her triumphant return...

This is the third Metroid game to come out since 2002. While the other Metroid's were pretty much new games, MZM is actually a remake of the very first Metroid game. But is it? With a real story to flesh it out, many new areas and some suprise bosses (at least for old Metroid fans), and the same moves you were able to use from Metroid Fusion, it's like a new game, a new classic, really. What you have is the cream of the crop. The graphics are very impressive for a GBA game and the Metroid art style is always appreciated. The controls are flawless, though vertical aiming may take some getting used to. You'll be suprised at how fast it moves. The sound is good, but many of the tunes you will have heard before, like the Brinstar theme music that you'd have heard on say, Super Smash Brothers (1 or 2). There are two things that may make you reconsider buying it right away, though. One, it's too easy. You have optional difficulty levels, but for it's default setting, it's still easy. To have a REAL good time, you want to beat it and go back and play on hard. It's not a long game at all, so... Another is how it holds your hand through everything. There is little exploration you can get done with markers pointing your everyway. Metroid Prime gave you the option to turn this 'hint' feature off, but you'll get no such luxury in MZM. Overall, it's still well worth the price of admission, and there are still some things you can do after beating it, like getting every upgrade, to add to replaying.

Brute Force - Xbox

Did Xbox really need this game?

Brute Force is like taking the best of a third-person action game and putting it on Halo-like steroids, at leas that is how the game is at first, but soon the "fuel" runs out. This game has been hyped a while, and to some people, it lives up to the hype..Whether it does or not, you can't deny that this is a good game, albeit unpolished. The story in the game is okay, I suppose...Your characters die, they get cloned. I think that's realistic and original, because you also lose cash(points) from the mission when you clone. The game is well polished as far as graphics, control, and sound go. Issuing orders are easy as pie, and your teamates are smart..As are the enemies. But it doesn't equal or top Halo's A.I. It's more like vast numbers versus your strength and skill..That is sometimes, too, because sometimes there are just a few skilled enemies that might wipe out your entire squad if you don't play it smart. This game does require some strategy, but it's up to you..Multiplayer is varied and pretty sweet. I'm going to further and say that I like it a bit better or equal to Halo's multiplayer. It's just that the view in third-person isn't as good as FPS. A few things I hate are that there are few types of enemies, weapons, and that the objectives in the missions get stale after a while. Usually it's go from point A to point B while killing all these guys or destroying this...Still, theres secret things to find during missions. It's fun, but a bit repetitive...Then you go to the same planets over and over again, even though there are many different levels. It's tedious..It can get boring. It's a bad way to make a game. If you're the owner of an Xbox, looking for something good to add to your collection ...I'd suggest you look into this Rent it if you're in need of a good third-person game.
