Genji: Dawn of the Samurai - PS2

Button Mash....Slash its all the same

Genji: Dawn of the Samurai is a game that when first looked at seems all to familiar. With games like Onimusha out on shelves Samurai games have much to live up to. Genji however delivers in a way that Onimusha does not. Genji has a typical story ....There is a race of people who are gaining power and you are special and have special stones that give you special powers....we heard the story. The story is not bad however but the true fun lies within the gameplay. Genji has a certain sort of depth that Onimusha seemed to have lacked. The ability to level up your character and purchase new weapons and armor with money gives the game a role playing feel and the characters seem more your own. The hack n slash gameplay couldn't be more satisfying. Genji runs at a whole different pace than Onimusha and offers something Onimusha never did....Jumping. Deathblows can be delivered at astonishing rates and with a matrix sort of slow mo twist the games battles can be fun and intense, something that seems to be lacking in some games nowadays. -Bert

Shadow Hearts - PS2

Living in FFX's shadow

Although generally overlooked Shadow Hearts recieved only moderate reviews by most magazines. However dive further in and you will find a fairly involved RPG with much to offer. Shadow Hearts doesn't bring tons of new ideas to the table but does give a mature demon/monster twist along with a battle system that keeps you involved in every battle. The game's dialogue is rather comical but flows through and the game keeps you interested with twists and turns around every corner. The sidequests are strange in their own delightful manner and can become rather involved in their own way. Although far from perfect Shadow Hearts has alot to offer considering RPGs on a classical scale are seen less and less. Shadow Hearts isn't for everyone but for some it will be a breath of fresh air.... possibly.-Bert
