The story telling in the solo campaign works like COD4 (I say "works like COD4" or something similar alot in this review). Between each mission there is a slick presentaion of how the war is going and what you will need to do in the next mission. In-game you take the perspective of a mute private along for the ride while your CO (in this case, Kiefer Sutherland) point out points of interests and objectives, basically tells you were you need to go next.
The single player campaign is split into two sections. The Soviet campaign and the Asian campaign.
The Russian missions are not very different from the other soviet missions from past COD games, you see Nazi in bombed out building, you shoot Nazi. the problem is that the developer, while creating a realistic environment with realistic characters and set pieces, is basically making the same environment they did with COD 1, 2, and 3. All very realistic and historically accurate, but all the same.
While the Asian levels are more innovative and intense that the Russian missions, get ready to die a lot. If you are easily frustrated by trial and error game play, you will hate these levels. I found myself dieing 5 or 6 times because I couldn't see the sniper in the trees behind me slowly draining my health, or something similar.
The controls and visuals are similar to COD4, which work well in this game. But it adds to the feeling that I have already played this game before putting the disc into the 360.
The multiplayer is also similar to COD4, which also works in the game because the upgrade and perk system is welcome in any multiplayer shooter. The zombie mode (COD's answer to GOW2's Horde mode). is fun for a little while but becomes boring and repetitive after a couple of hours. Side note; I don't spend a lot of time on competitive multiplayer in any game because I'm usually the worst player in the room and usual have a 3 to 1 death/kill ration. I usually play co-op or team co-op modes like horde or zombie Nazis in this game. usual will play a little but consider that when reading my multiplayer reviews.
Basically if you liked COD4, you'll probably like this game if your not looking for innovation. Rent for solo campaign, you can probably finish that in under a week. Buy if you liked COD4 multiplayer because it's basically the same in this game.

In my opinion, Call of Duty 4 is one of the greatest online multi player games of all time. I was quite concerned when I learned that Treyarch would be handling the development of 5. This coupled with the fact that they made the choice to return to WWII left me with serious concerns about the quality of this game.
I can easily say that all of my concerns were unfounded. Much to my surprise the return to WWII really works (theres a reason there are dozens of WWII shooters). Although we get warped to the past again, the action maintains it's fast and furious pace. The campaign while VERY short, is every bit as intense and exciting as Modern Warfare's and IMHO is actually more fun.
World at War doesn't reinvent the Call of Duty formula by any means, but builds on the success of it's predecessors. If you were a fan of Modern Warfare's multi player, then you will find a familiar niche in World at War. It is debatable whether or not you prefer WWII weapons or modern ones, but the game play is identical to 4 except for the inclusion of tanks on select stages.
Overall, I would say that unless you have an extreme aversion to WWII shooters you should definitely check this one out. Call of Duty World at War definitely lives up to it's namesake, and adds to the legacy of the Call of Duty series.
great but not the best

Ok, I bet the Nazi's and the Japaneese in only six hours I think. I also played the game using the but stroke, or Bayonet 90% of the time running through it like nothing. That is just rediculous! Call Of Duty 4 is far supperior. The one thing that was fun about this game which forced me to give this game two stars was the use of the "Flame Thrower". Do not buy, rent it, beat it, return it!
Doesn't live up to what I expected

This game is a great! The graphics are amazing, the A.I is brilliant and it runs super smooth. The main issue I have with it is that it was way too short. I only rented it and completed the campaign in a couple hours. The nazi zombie mode is just media hype! Although it played okay, it just doesn't give the creeps of a good horror-survival game. Then there's the online multiplayer which takes a step backward compared to COD4. To me the whole whole world war 2 shooter era was over with COD2. The weapons just don't do it for me! I would much rather shoot modern weapons than those old-school ones.
Disappointing, but playable.

Like every other Modern Warfare fanboi with too loose a grip on his money, I instantly pre-ordered World At War the moment that I knew it was out. My 360 had a sudden case of the Rings of Death right before the game was released, so I had to wait another two weeks to play it. I was itching to revisit the World War II era and the trailers I watched were just driving me insane.
Finally, the day comes. My 360 is returned and I immediately set it up and begin playing. I was definitely impressed by the visuals right away. As I explored some more, I noticed that it had a mode that I've desired FOREVER. Multi-player co-op. What's more fun that slaughtering Nazis with a pal? Since none of my friends have bought the damn game yet, I'll have to wait on that one.
Unfortunately, the more I played, the more negative things I discovered. The bouts of combat during single-player campaign are ridiculously monotonous, and your allies oblivious to the fact that they're even in a war. Either that, or they're just really smart, because they do whatever it takes to avoid battle. Run six feet, bonzai charge. Shoot all the Japanese while your allies stay 50 feet behind you, hiding behind a wall. Rinse and repeat. Don't worry, though, once you kill all the Japs, they're right behind you!
Most of my pet peeves stem from the Pacific campaign. I enjoyed the Russian campaign much, much more. There are several small things that bother me. I recall one scene on the Shuri Castle level where about 5-6 Japanese leap over a wall and attack nearby Marines. I'm standing about twelve feet from the incident, I lift my 'liberated' Arisaka to eye level, aim in directly on the chest of a bonzai attacker who is about to stab a comrade. I fire. Nothing. I fire again. Nothing. He starts attacking my poor A.I. (almost incompetent) friend and I begin to wonder if my fellow marines gave me a round of blanks as a joke. Once he's killed my fellow soldier, however, I'm free to load him full of lead. Little things like that bother me.
The online play is pretty engaging, but the accuracy is WAY off. At least it is with bolt-action rifles. Since they're my favorite weapon, I use them frequently. I can't tell you how many times I took sight at an enemy who had his back turned, walk up behind him until I can count the hairs on his neck, pick out a hair, aim, and fire, only to see him unphased, fire again, still no little "x" indicating a hit, and then be killed by his MP40.
So, all in all, the game looks great. The storyline is a little bland and sometimes dumb. It does come with plenty of content, and the online play is pretty much the same. Maybe it's just the bolt-actions -- I rarely use anything else -- but the accuracy seems whack to me. I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy it unless this person is A) a hardcore Call of Duty fan, or B) looking for a decent online WWII shooter.
a core gamer's viewpoint.

i know what you guys are thinking that it going to suck because is wasn't made by infinity ward? But you guys are wrong! cod world at war has some of the best graphics i have ever seen. but the shadow, and the texture could have been better. for instance when i look at the floor i can see it mudding and pixel looks and if you have notice some of the wall cover looks like crap! at least it better then call of duty 3.also i notice that for the xbox 360 version the graphics has once again won compare to ps3. but for call of duty 4 both version are identical amazing isn't it. for once i would like to see treyarch make the ps3 version ''better''. another problem is the AL. yeah they SUCK while i was playing story mode on veteran when i was hiding behind the cover. i saw SIX grenades pop right into my screen and guess what happen i died. but cod4 AL didn't throw massive grenades at you. another problem is that when i want my team mates to help me out to fight while i stay downlow. you would think that they will fight until they die. NO instead they stay with you. what the fuck am I your captain? i'm just pvt. miller and pvt. petrvesko. and to make them go i have to go forward and then go back to my safe hiding place. but the fight never ends! the enemy AL just keeps coming and coming they never stop! to stop them i have to run my ass toward them just to make them stop. And don't get me started with the checkpoint. one word retard.like gamepro said checkpoint is unbalance! when i am on the russian mission where you are suppose to destroy the flank guns (4 of them) i destroy one and guess what NO CHECKPOINT. i mean it already bad enough to try to beat it on veteran. but no you have to destroy of 4 of them to get a fucking checkpoint. and when i died a checkpoint then shows up. but there are a couple of nice features i like. the coop play is one of them. with three mode you can play with friends it a blast. it also fresh to see tanks in online play sure it almost like a huge advantage but it great for the team and for yourself. in the end i still like the game it fun and addicting the coop like i said was a blast and the story turn out to be better then what i have expected. but either way it should be rated a 4 out of 5. nothing compares to call of duty 4 modern warfare.
