Welcome to the future

The first time I read the Gamepro review of Call of Duty 4, as soon as I got to the part where the 'pros said this was arguably the best game of the year, I was skeptical, to say the least. The gameplay footage I had seen - while it looked exciting as hell - didn't seem to me to be anything special. What was so great about this game that it could bring down Halo 3? Now, I can't put the controller down. The 'pros are right - Call of Duty 4 IS the best game of the year. Sorry, Master Chief. Your real-life Marine brethren beat you out. In actuality, you play both as a U.S. Marine and a British SAS officer. As you've no doubt guessed from the title, there's no Nazis this time around, but there's plenty of terrorists taking their place. You globe-trot across Eastern Europe and the Middle East (does that qualify as globe-trotting?) trying to stop them from...well, terrorizing people, I guess. Honestly, when people start shooting, it won't really matter. The graphics are easily superior to Halo 3's, which is saying a lot. Once again, the Xbox 360's superior horsepower works wonders, tossing you right in the middle of firefights so realistic you may just wet yourself if you're not prepared. (If you didn't think the previous installments had enough blood in them, welcome to a wet dream.) Unlike its predecessor, COD4 doesn't really get your adrenaline flowing right off the bat. There's no epic charge at St. Lo to open the game, like there was during COD3 - this time, you go through an SAS training course, which is much easier than you'd probably find it in real life, then do some fancy running around and shooting at things on a ship in the Bering Strait. It's only after that that things really start to pick up. And pick up they do. Like I said, the firefights are incredibly realistic. The pounding of gunfire, the explosions, everything is exactly the way you'd want them to sound. The only one that I don't get is the clinking sound when grenades land on the ground - isn't it more of a thump? - but I guess that's a small complaint. It helps that the controls are tight enough that anyone can pick them up within a few minutes. The training course at the beginning helps. One thing I liked about COD3 that is in large part lost here is story. Not necessarily plot - more like characters. Anyone expecting secondary plotlines like in COD3 is going to be disappointed. Things are fairly linear - there is a flashback mission set near Chernobyl, which is a nice touch, but apart from that it follows a single storyline - and the characters aren't fleshed out. Quite frankly, I don't care if my Marine character's lieutenant gets killed in a nuclear strike - why should I? But these are all minor complaints. The fact is, Call of Duty 4 is as compelling a reason to pick up an Xbox 360 as Halo was to pick up an Xbox.

My game of the year

I'm not a huge FPS fan but this game is fantastic, the only gripe I have is the single player game is over to soon. Although It is ONE HELL OF A RIDE. The graphics are some of the best on any console, the story is very good. Death from above was one of the best levels ever. If you have not bought/rented this game yet you are robing yourself of one great gaming experience... 07 has got to be one of the greatest years in gaming ever Mario Galaxy CoD4 Rock band Mass Effect Bioshock Assassin creed

review for call of duty 4

call of duty four is a great example of a both fun and inovative fps. the campaign is long and intense and it leaves you begging for more. overall call of duty to me is not better than halo 3 but it is close.

WOW

wow this is an amazing game. The moment i started playing the beta i loved it. So realistic. If you aren't good at fp shooters and you play online you won't last long. Single player has a great story-line but a short campaign timewise.

COD4 Impresses!!

I must say that I was very afraid of buying COD4 because I was not impressed with 1,2,or 3. With Halo 3 already in my library and having a blast with it I didn't think I could invest in COD4. I am glad my friends twisted my arm into getting it. It is outstanding in all aspects. The graphics and sound was amazing. My wife continually yelled at me as my surround sound shook my entire home. I found myself hiding in fear from all the blast, grenades, and countless rounds being sprayed at me. The campaign mode was captivating and resulted in a loss of sleep on my part. The extra gameplay after the credits was also a pleasant surprise. The multiplayer was the kicker for me in this chapter of COD. All the past games have been horrible and could not compare to Halo 3, which I measure all games by. COD4 shines this time around and is awesome!! Now I just have to adjust my controls to match that of Halo to avoid confusion in the heat of battle and learn my way around all these unfamiliar maps. Kudos to COD developers for a game worth my hard earned cash and keep up the good work. Halo 3, COD4, and Assasins Creed will keep me busy during these cold winter months.

NICE

if you like shooters this is your game. Is it Counter Strike on steroids? Yes, but who cares if they're the steriods that get you into the hall of fame. This is as close to a perfect game as it gets. It doesnt reinvent anything but its a shooter so what more do you expect. The campaign is a little short but every minute of it is edge of your seat excitement. The online play is so in depth that you'll ask yourself what a Halo was. Possibly the best shooter ever made(sorry goldeneye fans)

True Pefection even better than Halo3

It's 1942 world war 2 and the americans are woah woah my bad it the year 2000 something it time fort some modern warfare read my review. This game is what call of duty should have been after the 2nd game. This game synbolizes greatness it's graphics are excellent the gameplay is hard but it's excellent and the same thing goes for the sound quality of the game. The only problem in this game is that "SPOILER SPOILER" The american dies and nothing u can do about it other than that it's a soild game I rarely give a 5 but this one gets one That's it That's all
