This is for Dirk2930 or whatever his name is. Re4's story is not boring! It is very entertaining. At first I thought the story was stupid because it sounded classic. President's daughter gets kidnapped and you have to save her. Sound Familiar? Well, how I was wrong. Re4 has one of the most engaging storyline in any game I played. There are a lot good story elements and also other information (I'm bad at writing. Only 10. Don't know what to call additional information. Shut up.) such as the origins of the monsters you face and the main bad guys of the game, the Los Illumanadoes.
I can't deny that Ashley (the president's daughter) is a pain and the enemies have bad A.I. but the game is still pretty scary. When I first started playing, it took me 1 day to finish the first part of the village cause I was too scared to go on. After the first time, I admit things are a lot less scarier but it is still pretty scary with the gloomy environment and people popping out at you. The game should take an average of 10 hours, not 10-15 like my friend Dirk or whatever mentioned.
Overall, great game, must have for $20. Rate 4.75 (not 4 like Dirk rated but a Editor's Choice) And not 5 like above.

Don't Believe the Hype

Pros Cons
Addictive gameplay Poor storytelling
Amazing visuals Braindead computer AI
Intense action It's boooring
Loads of content Doesn't live up to expectations
Innovative concepts

In retrospect Resident Evil 4 ended up being one of the most empty gaming experiences in my entire time playing video games. Maybe in my case Resident Evil 4 was a victim of mounting expectations, but either way I felt strongly that the series had taken a huge step back in every aspect with the exception of core gameplay and length.

For starters the script in this game is horrible. I will admit that corny lines are acceptable if you have an interesting underlying story or characters that are capable of exposing the viewer to a wide array of emotions. Sadly Resident Evil 4 has none of this instead the game is littered with corny lines that are only eclipsed by the games mindless plot. For example in a scene where Leon encounters one of the games main enemies he is told

Salazar: I've sent my right hand to dispose of you
Leon: You're right hand comes off?

Multiply this by about 50 and you have the games entire script in a nutshell. In RE4 Leon went from a strong willed character with a strong sense of justice to a cocky-overpowered cliche. So if you're like me in that you enjoy playing action games for the story then you'll probably be disappointed, It's just unfortunate as I thought with the script writing and voice acting from ReMake as well as the standard for stories set by games like MGS that this game would at least be able to conjure up an interesting story.

Though Resident Evil 4 isn't totally without merit. The new of gameplay with the third person camera view went a long way towards not only expanding the series but inspiring future games down the line. The graphics themselves were also nothing short of top class. In fact at the time the game came out the graphics were easily one of the most impressive display of visuals ever seen in a video game.

Now here's were I come in to ruin everything. While the game is enjoyable it's not very challenging. Which isn't the worst thing in the world for a gamer like me who's more story driven but without a story the lack of a challenge was especially unappealing on top of that the gameplay can end up feeling a little repetitive. For me it felt like I was playing for nothing, instead I'm just going through the motions to rescue a cliche damsel in distress from a cheeky evil mastermind, fortunately I have enough ammo to supply the troops in Iraq making the unfortunate experience quick and painless.

On top of that one of the core expectations from a Resident Evil game is some element of horror and suspense. Resident Evil 4 is extremely lacking in this department. The enemies for example could be scary but the intelligence takes away the pure irrational and animalistic nature embodied by past Resident Evil enemies. To top it off the one attribute they do posses, in that they can run at you, is nullified by the fact that they slow down and walk once they get within 6 feet of your character. Sure there's a few areas that can provide the gamer with that erie feeling but these events are way to far apart. In looking back there's probably about 3 or 4 areas where the player could conceivably be scared, which isn't a lot considering the sheer volume of the game.

This was another aspect that really rattled my cage. Over the years one of my main complaints from the series was almost any RE game was capable of being beaten in one sitting (save Code Veronica). So what game do they make last 15+ hours, the one with the worst story. I'm also not a fan of the actual setting for the game. Though the graphics were excellent, I still found the settings to be extremely depressing.

In conclusion RE4 is a very good Video Game if you're only looking for a game with solid gameplay. However if you're a fan of Resident Evil or looking for an intriguing story then you'll probably find yourself wondering what all the hype was about.

One RE to Rule Them All.

Just plain fun

No before I review this, let it be known that I am not a big RE fan. That tells you how good this game really is right off of the bat.
Story: The President's daughter has been kidnapped by some strange European cult and it's up to Leon Kennedy to find out what's going on and save her. There are many sinister things afoot and the villagers seem mindless and possessed. What is going on?
Graphics: This takes a turn from the usual RE game and gets rid of all pre rendered backgrounds in favor of new 3D environments. They make look a tad less real, but overall, I like the look of this game better. It also fixed the annoying camera angles. Anyways, characters are sharp and detailed and Leon moves fluently. Good stuff.
Sound: Some pretty decent voice acting for RE lol. Enemies make bone chilling shrieks and everything sets the right tone.
Gameplay: Lots of Gunning. You have to mow down hordes of crazed cultist at every turn. The game allows you to quickly climb ladders and jump from balconies in a hurry if you are being chased. The camera angles are no longer random angles. It is now a costant over the shoulder veiw, which works well with the game. You have a wide variety of weapons to use as well to dispose of your foes. Boss battles can be pretty epic. One even pits you against a giant lake monster! Epic stuff
Overall: I would say this is the peek of quality in RE games. It reinvented the formula in an exciting new way. If you have a Wii, Gamcube of PS2, go get this now!

Best RE yet.

Pros Cons
Addictive gameplay
Tight controls
Just plain fun
Epic boss fights
Engaging story
Amazing visuals
Intense action

Resident Evil has always been a mixed bag for me. I love the whole horror aspect of them, but I never liked the slow gameplay and the odd camera angles. This has all been addressed, though, in what I consider to be the best RE game ever made. Though this game doesn't technically have "zombies", don't be fooled. The enemies still move and act much like a zombie would, but they are slightly more human this time and it's just fun to fight evil monks ha.

Story: You play as Leon. He is on a mission to save the president's daughter, Ashley, after she has dissapeared in a mysterious part of Europe. During your quest to find her, you bump heads with a murderous cult with mysteries intent. It's up to you to solve this mystery and save the girl!

Graphics: The pre-rendered backgrounds from the previous RE titles is gone, so the graphics may not look photo realistic, but it's a nice trade off in the end. The environments still look great, adding a very creepy atmosphere everywhere you walk. The chracters are nicely detailed and everything falls nicely into place. No complaints here.

Sound: Decent voice acting. It wouldn't take home a grammy, but this is solid stuff. The cult members mutter all kinds of odd things throughout. It's solid stuff, but not a whole lot to be mentioned.

Gameplay: Finally, an RE that doesn't have limited ammo. This game is all about guns, and there's plenty of them. The camera follows an over the shoulder view, which works nicely for this game and their are no longer those annoying fixed camera angles that cause much unneeded deaths. It's all smooth and tearing through cult members is a blast. Their are a few puzzles to solve as well, but they are on the simple side and you probably won't have much frustration from them. Solid gameplay.

Overall: A very creepy, action oriented adventure with lots of plot suprises. This is an AAA game that no one should miss, RE fan or not.

Usually, I do not like playing RE games, but after playing Resident Evil 4, I love them. This game is worth the twenty dollars that it costs. I also thought that the killable merchant was a good touch >:) Not to mention the wide selection of weapons (my favorite gun is the Chicago Typewriter). Awsome Game....
