How Bad Controls Can Ruin A Game

Capcom making a zombie? No way! Actually this is a little different from their well know (and great) Resident Evil games. Dead rising has a much lighter tone, but is as graphic as ever. Think of it as if Dawn of the Dead and Dead Alive had a videogame baby. Its funny, its violent, and there are a crap load of zombies. You can tell when you first get the game that it will be about a lot of zombies in a large mall because there is a disclaimer that says the game is in no way related to George A. Romeros Dawn of the Dead. The start of the game is pretty cool as you do a fly-by in a helicopter of the city snapping pictures for your Pulitzer when you are told to land by a military aircraft. You land on top of the mall where you find out quickly things are not what they seem. Your objective is to get the story through several missions and get back to the roof in 72 (actually 7.2) hours or you miss your flight out of there. You can, if you want, just wait in safety for the whole time and run up to the roof and go home. But what fun would that be? Actually more fun than the story missions. I hate to burst anyones bubble that is dead set on buying this game, but the story missions suck on several different levels. First off, the character A.I. is worse than any game I have played. They do not see the zombies it seems, as they go in a straight line not even trying to avoid the zombies. The bosses also suffer from this. Some will get stuck running in place next to walls and be too easy. And the only reason there is some difficulty (and by some I mean killing spree inducing) is because the controls suck so badly. This is an action game. In an action game we should be able to shoot, aim, and move at the same time. Capcom did not see that to be the case. Instead you have to stop, aim and shoot. Not too fun when there are people running around you shooting and throwing grenades. Also, for some reason you cannot grab a clip from another gun, but must actually pick up the other gun. So guns are almost useless in this game. I found it easier to run at people with a 2x4. So, is there anything good about this game? Hell yes! Killing zombies has never been more fun or graphic. All the different ways to kill them, all the different parts of dismemberment, and covering the floors in undead goo makes this game a zombie genocidal masterpiece. I have never had more fun killing zombies. The graphics are also pretty good. Theyre not best of the next-gen good, but theyre good enough to tell that it couldnt be done on the Xbox. So, where does that leave this game? Good graphics, fun zombie-killin, but horrible controls and A.I. means this game is kind of in the middle. Some will love it, while others will hate it. For anyone who has intended to buy this game, I would recommend you rent it first. 3 out of 5.

Dead Boring the Hell Out of me

This game is way to overated. Yes it's fun to kill the living dead but when your trapped in a mall and your only enemy in this game are millions upon millions of the living dead well it gets very boring and the missions that you have to do are way to easy this game was a waste of money for me and i do not recomend it at all. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS GAME!!!! IF YOU WANT TO KILL THE LIVING DEAD GO BUY RESIDENT EVIL AND HAVE A BLAST!!!!

What can be better then zombie carnage?

Dead rising is an all around fun game to let off some steam after a hard day. The graphics are amazing. Have you seen how many zombies can appear onscreen? And the ability to use so many items in game keeps you coming back for more. The main flaw in the game is probably the poor A.I. and the saving. I got so sick of trying to save people that i eventually just let them die and the saving makes it so you can't experience all the the events in the game due to the 1 slot. All in all dead rising is an excellent game worthy of recognition, but not award winning material.

not what it could have been.

while this game controls fairly well and there are a number of comical ways to pick off your zombie (and eventually cultist) antagonists, this set-up gets old fast. i was looking forward to playing a dawn of the dead-style game but this ended up being a disappointment more than anything.

first off the game is horribly repetitive. there is little of interest to do except to explore the mall the game is set in killing off enemies in mostly the same ways. fun at first, but once the horrible lack of variety starts to rear its ugly head, you want to put the game down pretty quickly. you might have seen the "everything and anything is a weapon" slogan that this game's hype is primarily based upon, which is only partially correct. there are a lot of weapons you can use against your foes but only a few of them are of any use (mainly the bladed weapons and firearms) and in fact there are some items that oddly cannot be picked up as used as weapons, such as some tennis rackets and a few swords that i've seen. "everything" is a weapon my ass.

there are some side missions you can do like escort idiotic survivors to safety and take photographs to boost your stats but neither prove satisfying. photography is a mild amusement but like the main gameplay its appeal wears thin. the escort missions are as bad as any game featuring these and the people you lead to safety are so stupid you wonder how they managed to live as long as they did. and you will see what i mean as they repeatedly get killed off by zombies screwing you out of an important stat boost. it also takes away a good chunk of precious time, time that you need to keep a close eye on. that's right, this game is based on a time limit, and if you miss certain events you have to start the whole game over albeit with your stats saved. this would be fine if it weren't for the tedious, time-draining backtracking required to save your game. this only adds to the repetitive nature of the game. worst of all though is the the lack of support for crt televisions, making the game's text nigh-unreadable. text is important in reading in-game dialogue, knowing what items you've picked up, and for mission prompts which you need to know what to do next. capcom's nonchalant attitude about this issue doesn't help any.

so, any good points? the story is amusing, and the game has solid, responsive controls. but where's the game to back these up? a rental at best.

Why should we care?

Why should we care that Dead Rising is hard to find in Japan? If it's easy to find in America, then that's all that matters. The only reason I don't have this game is because I don't have an Xbox 360. And even if I did, my parent's wouldn't let me get it because I'm not old enough. The game looks awesome, though.

Zombie thriller!

Don't be fooled and think this is a horror game. Infact this game consists of humor... lots of it. The game starts you as a journalist Frank West, who can't melee or do much. The great thing about this game is the leveling up which makes you carry more weapons, makes you stronger and so forth. The BoF: Dragon Quarter type save system makes it very frustrating to end up realizing that you have to start the game over. But your stats carry on which is viable help. The storyline is all up to you. Do the cases, get further into the story, or just skip it all and try to survive 3 days. Whatever it is you want to do, the choices are all in your hands. Get some orange juice to heal yourself, get a golf club and start swinging at the zombies or even go to the gunshop and do an "operation clean sweep". For those that are using a standard TV, it will be HELL trying to read the text in this game so don't even bother with that. It doesn't affect you too much at all because thank goodness the subtitles are large enough to see. Get this game now, you won't regret it.
