God of War: Best game this year (so far)

On the outside God of War looks like your simple, run-of-the-mill hack n' slash. But on the contrary God of War is an epic, mind testing, skill rewarding, eye bulging, master of a game. From the very moment you hop onto the rickety sinking ship in the middle of the Agean Sea you'll be amped up by the monumentous score and raw carnal verouscity of God of War. You play as Kratos a pale, pissed-off Spartan with a troubled past. But believe me this Greek is no snow white. You'll slash away with the best of them with you weapon: The Blades of Chaos (permently grafted to your skin I might add) against a mariad of familar ancient Greek beasts including minotaurs, hydras, gorgons and gods. The fighting is top-notch as every move can be linked together to make devestating 100+ combos. With the addition of upgradeable magic and specialty weapons you'll be a god on earth rather than a mere mortal. All ranting aside, God of War is not without its flaws. At times the enemies can be a bit unfair as you are slashing the living crap out of them and they still find a way to land blows. Also without control of the camera, it may not always be in the exact spot you want. And finally I think could have been a bit longer with at least one more boss battle. In the end God of War's pros out weigh its cons with high production values, robust fighting engine, beautiful scenaray, and challenging puzzles and enemies. This is a must have for any testostorone- producing PS2 gamer, and other consol owners may even think about buying a PS2 just to play it.

Kratos...your balls are showing.

Yes,the game is beautiful.Yes,the soundtrack is emersive and serene. The controls and battle system is dead on.It have sex, brutality and a story that earns it's mature rating. But what makes this game stand out is that how smart the game design and gameplay is.It is refreshing to have a game that combines fighting, platforming and puzzles. The game never gets boring and it stays challanging .Every battle you have to think. This is anti-button mashing at its finest. It is amazing to watch passionate game programmers explain how they got to giving us this great game.It gives a ginuine feeling of accomplishment after you solve a puzzle or beat a boss.It is a game that feels like a great movie..that you play. When you feel it couldn't get better or surprise you ,it does.Pure man-stuff.It hasn't been this good since Braveheart.A gamers game.

To short

In my opinion this game was entirely to short. I have to admit that the story line is the best i have seen in a while. But they dont give you any side options. In other words its too striaght forward.

Its not a myth if you can beat it with its own arm.

This game is simply, Game of the year. From the start it has this engaging gameplay, and it takes some of the best things from the game industry, and applies them here. This game has so much a gamer looks for. To start the puzzles, are ingenius, even the box puzzles are great. The combat is fluid, and amazing. Sometimes I felt like I was playing a movie. Along side the normal combat, you have little mini games, in which you press buttons to see the main character Kratos deliver and beautiful and savage blow. And speaking of the Kratos, he is one of the most badass, badasses in gaming, today. Sometimes you'll do something and just look in awe and ask whether he did that or not. And kratos crosses many gaming boundries, let me tell you. From having commiting ritual sacrifice of a live human, to having a threesome with two bare brested ladies. And while on the subject, while the guy gamers get to see bare breasts in the game, the women gamers get their equivalent to a Lara Croft in Kratos. But nudity isn't the only vulgar suprise you get in this game. You can literally rip a person in half in this game, oh and not just the enemies, no, innocent bystandards too. Theres alot of things I have yet to touch upon, the spectacular musical score, the gorgeous graphics, the amazing voice acting and narrative, this game should go down as a classic. No, it didn't really bring anything new to the realm of gaming, but rather, it proves a game doesn't need new features, or a new experience to be entertaining. It brings you a amazing, visceral experience that if you happen to be over a certain age, or know a way to get it otherwise(Note, masterfang does not endorse lying about age, fake ids, lying to your parents or going to Wal Mart if your under the age requirement), you should experience yourself. I salute you David Jaffe. Cheers.

Really good, but no Devil May Cry

First the good points, great story, excellent magic, and good opportunities for combos. The bad thing is I don't have free reign with my blades of chaos (the two knives attached to chains on your wrist) They move fluidly, but not in an intuitive way. Light attacks are mainly the most effective and can be comboed into heavy attacks without a delay, but you never feel in real control of the action like in Devil May Cry (the original or the 3rd). Independant movement of the blades would have made all the difference in most of the fighting, instead I find myself using the same combos to hit from afar, or knock enemies in the air, but never with the control or fluid switching that I can achieve in Devil May Cry 3. The special button combos and grabs on specific enemies are all fun, and most of the controls are dead on (except poorly designed and overly implement narrow tightrope walking) The puzzle fit well into the action and the bosses are phenonmenol. I just don't see myself playing this through more than once when there is better gaming to be had. Great rental or good for a cheap buy, but I wouldn't pay full entry for this title.

God of War

Devil May Cry meets Tomb Raider meets Resident Evil in this fantastic offering from SCEA. From the beginning the story will hook you and force you to play through an action game wrought with plenty of action and puzzles that, surprisingly and unlike most other series, do not detract from the action. The controls are spot on and do nothing to hinder pulling off the multitude of combos and magic attacks you gain as the game progresses. A lot of action games can take a few hints from the control scheme and the mini game super kills offered in this game. Boss fights take on a whole new level and rise above the hack slash retreat hack slash retreat monotony of mosty action games. The graphics are as deep and engaging as the aforementioned story. Character models move fluidly and there is no noticeable slowdown even when screen filling or large groups of enemies appear. Enemy AI is superb. While not the smartest enemies in an action game they are far from dumb. There is no "wait until Kratos finishes off Bob then Ill move" or the "take a number and wait for your turn" tactics like in other games. Many times you will find yourself facing hordes of enemies while also facing ranged attacks. This game in a word is AWESOME. If you love a great action game, with an engaging story that will hook you then do yourself a favor and pick this up TODAY!

Go kratos

When i first played god of war, i was blown away, but as quickly as i was blown away i was getting a little disgruntled by what i saw. Mindlessly fighting the same enemies, God of war fails to deliver on enemy selection, the game is far to short, but it has great controls, a killer plot and dares to be different. I'm hoping for a sequel.

Holy $#!*

When I first heard about a game based on Greek mythology, I thought about how reading The Odyssey wasn't such a waste of time. Amazed at the visuals and gameplay, I was sold. The gritty and brutally realistic scenery and character models are stunning, and the gameplay has had me hooked for hours. The storyline is solid and epic, and the main character, Kratos, is a prime example of a wayward, controversial protagonist. Between the boss fights, the puzzle challenges, the gut-wrenching battle scenes, and the awesome cinematics, I found myself saying "Holy $#!*" while I was caught in many moments of amazment. The combos you can complete in this game are stupendous and bountiful. You will find yourself making more and more unique combos, and possibly going half an hour without using a single combo twice. Godly powers, blade techniques, interactive environmental attacks, combos, and 'minigame' KO sequences will keep you fighting the superb AI for hours on end. This game is a very solid bet for Game of the Year and has earned SCEA a pristine spot in the history of pivotal video games. In one sentence: Finally, a hack-n'-slash to go down in history!

Best PS2 Action Game Ever

I used to hate action games. Sure, Prince of Persia was fun, but didn't keep my interest forever. Then God of War comes along. Think Prince of Persia mixed with Mark of Kri, and you have a good idea of what this game is like. Your objective is to kill Ares, the god of war, and your horrific visions are guaranteed to end. The graphics are on par with most Xbox games, and the sound effects are pretty impressive too. The best part are the controls, which take a cue from Mark of Kri. See a button above an enemy's head? Press it and another set of button sequences come along. This really helps in keeping the gameplay fresh. This is a definite must-have for anybody who owns a PS2. You won't be dissapointed.

"Never before has a game combined epic storytelling with brutal action"

God of War is the reason why Playstation 2 has become a God itself. Showing off some of the best graphics, best controls, and a story that will make Samuel L. Jackson cringe, I have no choice but to award this game the prestigous 5.0. I had my doubts about God of War when I first sat down to play it, but after what I've seen the main character Kratos has been through, I hope that he never heard me. The first beautiful thing you'll notice about this game are its graphics. It pushes the PS2's graphic chip to the limit. The control are so fluid and well intergrated into the gameplay that you won't even notice the bad@$$ moves you'll be pulling off. Ther are so many more good things to talk about this game that I won't have space for it all. God of War is a worthy candidate for Game of the Year in my book and was well worth the wait.
