This game is cool. Levels could have been designed slightly better. Graphics are great on the PS2. I enjoyed the button timed mini-games to do damage to creatures and bosses. Not for children as this game is INTENSELY brutal and gory but fun. Swimming sections are ok but some improvements should have been implemented. A game that should be in your collection.

This game loses points for time depreciation, only because the sequel was so well done. For the record if I rated this game in '05 it would be a 5 easy. Still, for arguments sake anyone who picked this game up and played it for the first time in '08 would see this as a near 5 game. The graphics are the one thing that are sub par. Even for it's time, it didn't reach the graphical heights to really impress too much. But once you're past this "eye sore" you're in for one of the most entertaining games on the market. It gives birth (rebirth?) to an entire genre and a series of clones using similar formulas. From Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas to Heavenly Sword and Conan, no other game has had a more profound impact on the games that are produced and popularized in today's gaming world. Sure, Devil May Cry attempted to make the platform/adventure but it seemed to only to keep the seat warm for another franchise. (Don't worry, Capcom won't leave that throne without a contender ;) God of War brought an enthralling storyline and a morbidly charismatic (Hero?) to the table and blended it with fluid and at times CHALLENGING gameplay and puzzles. The enemies are a puzzle in themselves sometimes as you must strategize in order to proceed. I can't tell you how many times I played through it on "God" and would spend death after death trying to come up with a good plan to get to that next part where I'd have to rinse and repeat! Just pure entertainment. The challenge mode is a nice diversion as well. Challenges can be tough at first. It usually takes at least a play through before even the challenges can be completed, just based on the skill that is sometimes required to complete them. Spells are awesome and somewhat play into your strategizing (Hmm...would Medusa'a stone attack be easier to plow through all these guys or should I take my chances with a more powerful attack that will get me more red orbs?) and the battle system is well balanced and progressively challenging. I loved the difficulty setting and playing through them progressively and having it STILL BE FUN my 3rd time through ther game. You you are hard pressed to find many of THOSE type of games out there ANYWHERE. God of War is an instant classic and worthy IP to don a dynasty of games after it. A PSP game (God of War: Chains of Olympis) is coming along with God of War 3 which is moving along nicely. Kratos is now a fixture in the gaming community. This is one of the best games ever made. A recommended addition to any serious gamer's collection. -SirCrush

The epic story to dethrone Ares the God of War has never been this satisfying. You get diffrent weapons as you progress and magic such as Poseidon's Rage which is a powerful lightning attack. I cant stop playing this game. Priced at $20, you cant go wrong with this game.
