Just plain fun

Three 3-d Spider-man games have come out since the release of Spider-man 2. Ultimate Spider-man, Spider-man 3, and Spider-man: Web of Shadows. Ultimate Spider-man was too story heavy, and there was nothing to do if you weren't heading to a mission. And, the story kinda sucked anyway. To be honest, I haven't played Spider-man 3 though. But I've heard nothing but bad about it, and I don't want to waste $4 on renting a piece of crap. And Web of Shadows was too heavy on its repetitive combat.

Now, the fact that all these games were just okay is odd, seeing how incredible Spider-man 2 was. It was based off the Spider-man movie of the same name which is, in my opinion, which normally ends up in a quick cash-in of a game (as evidenced by Spider-man 1 and 3.). But not Spider-man 2. It seemed that each of those games were taking 2 steps back for every step forward.

Spider-man 2 is a game about being Spider-man, period. Yeah, that's right. No lame Venom segments or anything like that. You stick to everyone's favorite hero in red and blue tights (except for Superman, of course.). With excellent swinging controls and very Spider-y acrobatic combat, the game has a great flow to it. Unlike USM, side missions that involve rescuing a falling civilian or stopping a carjacking are constantly popping up, leaving you with something to do all the time. And, unlike SM: WoS, you don't lose points if you decide to skip one every once in a while.

The story of the game isn't all that great. None of the story missions are particularly challenging. Oddly, the meat of the game is in the side quests. But the story missions are entertaining nonetheless. One of my personal favorites is stopping Mysterio's gas station robbery. His power bar is extremely high, but one hit defeats him. Classic, like the goldfish in Earthworm Jim.

I cannot recommend this game highly enough. You'll definitely find it for less than $10 used, and if you aren't a graphics whore, you'll love it.

Best game based on a movie ever!!

What can I say, Spider-man 2 is the best game based on a movie ever created. This time around you actually get to save civilians and at the same time manage a social life. Your allowed to swing anywhere and actually lan don the ground without dying compared to the 1st game. In this game you see Black cat, Mysterio, Rhino, and of course Doc ock!! Activison did quite well with this game as far as graphics and everything in it!! So if your contemplating wither or not to buy this, take this from a fellow GMR (Gamer) and get it already, you'll be glad you did.

GREAT GAME BUT TOO REPETATIVE

The idea of being able to wonder around Manhattan and pretty much do whatever you want is great.. but.. after a while it gets boring. It seems like it was the same people asking for the same help all the time. The actual storyline was perfect to the movie (except they through in Mysterio, which was a good thing) but all the side missions got to be too repetative. After a while I gave up on searching for icons and tried jumping off buildings to see how high I would bounce after hitting the pavement (Empire State Building Antenna still rules). A great improvement over the first game but it still has some kinks to iron out. Graphics and sound were great. Control took some getting used too but afterwards it was flawless.

Better than the 1st, but gets repetitive

I love the new idea of being able to go anywhere. The new controls help this a lot for precise moves (except in fighting, the combos don't work for me). They even give you the option of the easy web-slinging or the normal. Easy is basically how you slung in Spider Man 1. Normal control, though, Is REALLY REALLY FUN!!! But, sadly, It fails to shine as one of the best games. As in every game, they HAVE to have some gothic girl with a skin-tight leather suit. Sure, I'm a guy, but I want to focus on my mission and not stare at her butt al day and lose! Also, the little side missions are very repetitive. I swear, every mission is the same. There's not even a variation in script. They say the same things over and over, but with adifferent voice. And lastly, the music suddenly comes on for no reason sometimes AND It doesn't really fit the missions sometimes. They played some dramatic orchestra music while I was slinging to Mary Jane's play. Oh well, I hope the third will be better. Remember the end of the movie (*hint hint*).

[do what ever a spider can...]

Graphics Resolution is good; you can see a good amount of NYC landscape in the distance. But it looks like it was made using the same engine from GTA. It's not bad, but it's not pushing any of the Gamecube's hardware. Controls Now, this is where I have my gripes. The fighting controls are next to imposable. In fact, I don't ever recall being able to pull off a combo. This is mainly do to the fact that instead of 2 fighting controls, there is only one button to press; the "b" button, and I got to tell you, that's a lot for one button to handle. Normal fights are just a button mash at best. Also, this time around, there are less webbing attacks, basically all you can do is wrap them up (which they quickly break out of), and yank 'em. There are a couple of things you can buy from the "Spidey Store", like the ability to wrap them to poles, but it's just so hard to do, it's not worth it. The web slinging is the only thing that's really been improved. Sound Sound is all right. There isn't really much in-game music to speak of, but the voice acting is slightly above par, weather it be Toby's monotone voice, or the random yelling's of citizens, it's pretty good. But, like I said, there's not really any music. Overall Overall, Spider-Man 2 is a pretty fun, although short game. You'll blow through the actual story in around 5 hours. You can continue to rack up the Hero Points (the apparent currency in New York), but with the really crappy fighting controls, I don't see why you would. There's nothing to unlock, just some more fighting moves that you won't really care about learning how to pull off. Unless you're a really hardcore Spidey fan, then just give this one a rental. It's fun while it lasts; it just could of been so much more. Replay value is high, you can just swing the streets all you want, stopping crime, and beatin' baddies, but there really isn't any incentive to. Next game, lets hope for more of a blending of Spiderman The Movie, and Spider-Man 2.

Anti-Grand Theft Auto

This the best Spiderman game i've ever played. Its open-ended, Grand Theft Auto Type gameplay makes it a game everyone MUST play. Personally I like that you can do almost anything with thugs, like throwing them off a 17-story building, throwing them into the ocean, bash them into walls, lasso them around them around in circles, tie them to traffic lights, pile-drive them into ground, and then continue to beat the crap out of them even after they're unconsious (this game is more violent than they lead you to believe). The only thing that I didn't like about the game is that the boss battles can be overly annoying, and that the citizens mouths dont move, but its Activision people, you expect more? Anyway this is a great game.

to be or not to be spidey

this is definitely a great game. not only do you get the freedom to swing around new york city wherever you want to go, but also the ability to go up to random people and hear them talking on their cell phones and choose when you want to help people. the game gives you the ability to feel like spider man. doing combos in mid air is easy and simple to pull off. the variety of attacks are enormus and are accurately pulled out from the movie. what brings the game down is the slight jink in the games camera, the average quality of the graphics, and the slight frustration in having to repeat a few of the levels. but dont let that effect how much fun you will have in the game. the guys really did thier homework in making this one.

True freedom lives in the hands of a Super Hero.

First off finally. Treyarch has done what no one else could do, take the freedom that was started in the GTA series and expand on it. Spider- Man 2 takes freedom to whole new sense. Like other free roaming games yoou can go where ever you want whenever you please. Treyarch hoever one up's this little idea and decides let's allow people to REALLY go any where. The wall crawler can stick to anything from lamp posts to the Statue of Liberty. Another amazing thing was how they were able to shrink the actual Manhattan, of course nothing compares to the shear greatness of mastering the "Web Swing". Doing whatever a spider can was never so true, of course you can always just walk.
