This is an incredible title with an exciting story line. The sanity meter is a brilliant concept, and the hallucinations definitely add a lot to the game. Although the "book of the dead" throughline is a little hackneyed, it's a good connective element that ties the entire story together. The gameplay is what really sets this title apart, though, and the creepy milieu just sets the stage for a great experience.

Insanity has never been this fun.

Pros: awesome sanity effects. Cons: characters are strange, finishers are not so excellent. The story is that you are Alex Rovias, a college student in washington, and you grandfather mysteriously dies in his mansion in Rhode Island. So begins the game. While in the game you can LOSE YOUR F***ING MIND. You'll hear some of the most disturbing stuff in gaming history. The best effect is the save killer. The real thing is your game won't be deleted. This is "the sanity effect"*. Overall, the game was my favorite GC game. *(patended by Nintendo)

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem

A long time coming before it's 2002 release, the game has been oficially added to the long list of Nintendo classics. Touted as a Resident Evil killer, the game proved it was much more than that with an intensely gripping storyline in wich the player is played and a host of other remarkable features. The battle system is simplistic but when used in conjunction with the magick spells it turns into a fun and creative alternative to the standard auto-aim fights and other akward battle systems(a key difference from Resident Evil). The presentation adds a thick layer of atmosphere with awesome creature desings and architectural grandness, and the sanity system is just the creepiest thing to come into the eyes of a jaded horror fan. The sound design is also cfarted with the same amount of care as the rest of the game. Enemy howls soar through yoour ears while lip-synched voice-acting brings each character to life with their convincing plights and sorrows. Eternal Darkness' visuals are also amazing and run smoothly, with ocasional texture problems being the only minor gripe. The game is extremely enjoyable, with everything from the gameplay to the interaction with the story polished and expertly crafted. It's good to know that with all these good aspects the game is pretty long and needs to be completed three times before the plot completely unfolds, but believe me, you'll play it alot more than that.

Who needs sanity in the dark?

What originally started as a Nintendo 64 project and scrapped due to the system's passing, has finally manifested itself back onto the Nintendo Gamecube. Eternal Darkness, like other "horror" genre games focuses on scaring the hell out of you, only with the help of an innovative Sanity meter. Every time your spotted by an enemy, you lose a little bit of sanity. The more sanity you lose, the crazier the things that happen to you. The game also encourages you to fight, rather than play it safe and conserve ammo a la Resident Evil. The Magick system is something refreshing for the genre. The ability to combine magical runes and make your own magic spells is fun and intriguing. You can enhance your weapons, cast a shield, or call upon monsters to help you in the heat of battle. Graphically the game is unimpressive and too cartoonish. The Character design is bland and nothing special. The graphic engine however can render multiple lighting effects to suit your graphical needs. Most of the levels get repetitive and boring especially once you come back later in the game and revisit such places. The game no doubt, does offer some frightening areas to explore however. The Game controls sluggishly. It feels like a workout trying to move your character from time to time. The game does feature full analog support in which many people favor to Resident Evil's control scheme. The game does have a few of the cheap scares, but the real eeriness is in the spooky sound effects and chilling music. Eternal Darkness's ambient sound adds fittingly to the mood and style of the game. And for this type of game, sound is key. There's not much replay to it, but dont get me wrong its definitely worth a play, even if it's only once.. It's an above average game and can hold it's own in a genre occupied by Resident evil's and Silent Hill's. It also proves Nintendo can provide for the Mature rated audience and does have a bit of a dark side to its little purple box.

Eternal Darkness is one unique shocking game.

In the game, I have noticed that the sanity makes the player insane. The game has spells, items, weapons, and the sanity meter. When the meter goes down, the game puts the player in a world like no other. The game makes the room go upside down, puts bugs on the screen, pretends to delete all files, has the blue screen of death, has a eternal darkness title screen, and it goes on forever until the player makes the meter go up. In order to get the final ending, beat the game 3 times. May the sanity stay with you!

History's sanity meter is low and I lost my mind.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is one of those very rare games that changes gaming forever. With a great story line that takes you all the way to roman times to now. The story is about a young women (you) that gets a call that her granddaddy is dead. She goes home and trys to find out why her granddad doesnt have a head any more. So she find this book that was her granddads and starts reading it and while shes reading you play as the main character in that story. The characters in the story are people in history that tries to fight demons that want their leader or master out into this world. Later the women finds out that she must finish what the characters in the book started. But the story is not the best part of this game be far. There's magic spells in the game also that shields you, weapon inchant that increase damage and recoveries that increase health, mana, and sanity. Yes sanity, the best part of the game. If your characters sanity is low you start to see wierd stuff happen to your t.v., gamecube and the character it self, it plays with your mind. Besides that, the games graphics and sounds are great and realistic til you have no sanity then stuff gets really freaky. controls are fantastic, the camera angles make this game what it is. The best damn Horror Game since Resident Evil 2

Yes, that so-called "kiddy" system ain't so kiddy no more. This game can really mess with your mind. The sanity meter really brings this horror game beyond all others. So, how scary is the game? Whoa, let me tell you, it is so scary that you'll probably turn the game off 4-5 times. Now what's so scary about the game? Well, knocking doors, ringing phones, and many others that will definitely scare the hell out of you! Do not miss out on this game, it's so scary and important of all, the story and gameplay are top notch. Buy this game now if you don't have it, cause it makes saying "kiddy" to the Gamecube a "dumb and wrong statement".
