Nice atmosphere, but could I get some gameplay?

Pros Cons
Engaging story Unresponsive controls
Awesome audio Lousy camera/viewpoint

I've always heard my friends talk about the "creepy" Silent Hill series. I had always wanted to try a Silent Hill game out, but it seemed every retailer I went to just didn't seem to carry these games other than Silent Hill 4: The Room. Finally I found Silent Hill 2 used in a small little gaming store in Houston. I bought it for $10 and was glad to see it was in perfect condition. Anyways, let's get on with the game and quit rambling about my story.
Now I went into this game not knowing anything about how a Silent Hill game works. The story is that of James, a man who receives a letter from his dead wife telling him to meet her in the town of Silent Hill. Hmmm, creepy enough. Anyways, your characters heads over to ol' Silent Hill and the story kicks off into a nightmare world full of odd, creepy monsters and demons, as well a lot of dark creepy rooms. The controls are rather awkard and can be pretty annoying. James moves in an odd fashion and combat is rather slow and clunky. The gameplay also has a lot of walking down endless corridors looking for open doors, only to go in the room and find a key for a locked door. It gets pretty tedious. This game is not meant to wow you with intense action anyways. The sound on the other hand is great! The audio is very disturbing and you often hear things in the distance that are much scarier than anything you face. The Graphics, though PS2 game, aren't bad. They have a grainy film look and creat a very disturbing environment full of atmospere. The story is a creepy tale, with many twists and turns until the end. I won't spoil anything, though.
All in all, if you are a survival horror fan, you may want to look into Silent Hill 2, but be warned there a lot of key fetching and bad combat and controls that make this adventure less fun than it should be.

Spooky

Pros Cons
Innovative concepts Lousy camera/viewpoint
Engaging story Unresponsive controls
Awesome audio Repetitive gameplay

Now my pros and cons may seem like I should have rated this game less than I did. The way I see it, though, is that I should not rate a game like this based on fun. This game is more of an experience. It's very atmosperic and creepy and it keep you interested in seeing what happens next. It's like a creepy old horror movie.

Graphics: They are very grainy. Environments are a little drab and everything is covered in a mist of fog(which is fine, as it's supposed to be) The chracter models don't look horrible, but they do have a very outdated look to them. The cinemas look great though.

Sound: Very creepy ambient noises are abound! They make you cringe in your seat, and afraid to look to see what lurks around the corner.

Controls: God awful. The movements are very awkard and the action is slow and sludgy. The camera itself is often fixed to a point that it's annoying. I understand, though, that this game isn't so much meant to be "fun"

Story: A creepy story of a man who gets a letter from his dead wife to meet her in Silent Hill...just weird and creepy. I like it though.

Gameplay: Typical survival horror stuff. Run around hacking monsters and looking for keys to doors and special items. Kind of dull really.

Overall: This game is a great "experience" that may just creep you the hell out! Just don't go into this expecting a fun action romp.

Silent Hill 2

This was the first Silent Hill game i ever played. infact, this game was so "disturbing" that i couldn't even get passed the apartment in a single rental. It wasn't until i rented it again that i managed to overcome just a little bit of the fear and move on further in the game, which i made it only as far as the Museum. Nevertheless, this was a very exciting experience playing this back in 2002.

The Best Horror Game Ever

Let's be honest, for anything to be to be scary, it must be dark. Silent Hill 2 is dark. And guess what, it's scary and at the same time touching and engrossing. Stroylines don't get any better. A man's wife dies, and years later, he receives a letter in the mail from her. The letter tells him to go to Silent Hill, the place where they had their honeymoon years ago. So, of course, he goes. That's all the details I can give on the story, it is simply too great to be ruined. But I can say that the characters are all interesting and disturbed by some degree of their dark pasts. It just feels real, although it is set in a spooky ghost town. The graphics, controls, and everything else in this game are simply fantastic and you must play through this game at least once before you die. - Luke

HORROR JUST GOT SCARIER!

Only reason this game doesn't get a 5.0 is because there was alot of running around with nothing happening, otherwise this was one of the best I've played. Once again Horror is unleashed in the town of Silent Hill and you have to solve the dissapearance of your wife but the typical weird looking creatures and puzzles stand in your way. I actually had more fun beating enemies with a pipe than shooting them. With the Blood filled demon dimentions and slaughtered bodies filling the streets and hallways this once again has to be one of the scariest games I've played. Well done!

Fun,scary and 10 times better than resident evil

In silent hill 2 you play a man whom just got a letter from his wife who was supposed to be dead after a car accident. Your main objective is to find your wife at Silent Hill. I will admit the control is a little hard. The positives in this game is for one thing the plot is suspenseful because as you know you don't know how it's possible that your wife whom was dead for a year can all of a sudden write a letter which makes this game very suspenseful.Another positive is it doesn't just have zombies come after you (Unlike Resident Evil) you probably have to play the game for AT LEAST a half hour and that's a good thing because you don't just fight zombies right away they come out when you least suspect them. Another positive is the clues and hidden secrets you find about Shilent hill and your wife. The plot in this game is very suspenseful and will have you chilling from start to finish as for the graphics even the graphics makes this game look suspenseful.

A spooky game that horror junkies shouldn't miss

Bad camera angles return with a vengeance in Silent Hill 2. But it's good enough to make you want to play in a lit room. Silent Hill 2 will once again manage to mess with your head in a way that other horror games just can't seem to emulate. You play as James Sunderland. Who mysteriously gets a letter in his dead wife's hand writing inviting you to a place that the two have shared fond memories in. The once peaceful Silent Hill. The first 15 minutes of the game are one of the scariest moments. Your by yourself running through dense fog with barely a sound. Right then, you know that this game is all about atmosphere. Once you get into Silent Hill, you'll see an impressive make of a small town gone ghost town. Silent Hill is impressive looking at it's lowest point. Every bit has a great amount of detail. Every puzzle, hallway, street corner, and room seems to have only one purpose. To scare you into saving and turning off the console. Although the fog outside hinders your vision greatly, it only seems to add to that atmosphere that makes you feel like anything could happen at any moment. The audio is top notch. Every little sound is there to get your heart thumping a bit too hard for your liking. And when your gimmick of a radio starts buzzing, which signals that there is a tormented creature nearby, it's on. But that is not to say the game doesn't have the usual horror genre flaws. The fighting machanics are clunky and at times frustrating. Hitting a monster with a led pipe while he is down is next to impossible at times. Simple acts like this are also hindered by the notorious bad camera angle curse. How are you suppost to fight a boss when you can't see him? There is yet to be a horror game to fix this, but everyone is still waiting. Another sore spot is the lack of a variety in creatures. Although they are freightening and disturbing, you'll only come across about 4 or 5 types. But for anyone looking for that great scare, Silent Hill 2 will not disapoint.
