Ice can be fun, wind is not

Icewind Dale is a Dungeons&Dragons based RPG, In which evil has suddenly plagued the world, and your party must stop it. Whether you like it or not. That's the major problem with this game. No matter what allignment you have chosen, you still end up doing the same quests. When someone chooses to be evil, they should work against good, or for themselves, and not working for the good of the world. But the customization is nice. You can choose from an array of races and then choose a job and align some weapon skills. Then you will choose an allignment for each character, and then you have a band of wouldbe adventurers ready for fun and alcahole, which you can buy at a pub. The graphics aren't very good, even for the time the game was made. It looks worse than the first Diablo which was released in 95. The gameplay consists of completing alot of sidequests and leveling up your characters. Which, by the way, can take an excruciatingly long time. This is because of the really tough difficulty later on. Expect to spend at least a day of hard and boring levelling up in order to survive. Money is a big issue too. You will go to a shop and gawk at the really expensive weapons. And expect to gawk forever. The voice acting is actually good, except for the things your party members say. Who talks while battling? Although the game is fun for those who like customization and constant levelling up, those who like the more fast paced RPG's like Baldur's Gate or Diablo will want to stay away.

Don't buy this game if you're expecting anything great...

I bought Icewind Dale awhile back on the promise of even more adventure in the Forgotten Realms world that Baldur's Gate opened... I was incredivly disapointed and fealt I needed to give fellow BG fans a review of my own before they bought the game. Graphics:The game does have okay graphics, but they are too fuzzy and lack the detail given in Baldur's Gate. The items are also not very detailed, and I do like some of the spells (Fire ball for instance) The graphics are a little more realistic in that apect on a few spells. Sound: The music isn't that great, but it's not that bad either it does get annoying after awhile though so its great that you can turn it off. The character sounds are a little annoying after awhile but you can still turn that off as well, or regulate it from frequent to seldom. Control: The control's on this game suck (.) They have poor maps, the controls are not as advanced as you'd like them. It grows on your nerves when your playing and you can't edit spell books, See containers or items without highlighting with the cursor. Fun Factor: It's more work than play and it's almost mandatory to have a stratedgy guide due to no map markings, poor spell book options, and it's an altogether newbified form of Baldur's Gate. The lack of NPC relationships does definantly make for a boring game and has limited non-storyline exploration. It is an okay game for people not expecting too much out of it, but if your someone who fell in love with Baldur's Gate like me it is a joke.

The Giant of the Black Isles

With all the gaming companies spending all their time and the players money on unneeded 3d graphics and catchy explosions, it good to see that Black isles has remembered that tho graphics are nice, the real selling point of any game is fun-factor and plot. While other companies hash out more remakes of wolfenstein, BI takes a more hands- on approach, rather than just repeatedly clicking the mouse button and hoping you are facing the right direction, this game involves strategy and thought. It is the feeling of this writer that despite all the duke nukem 3d and unreals, as long as there are companies like Black Isles, and my personal favorite Blizzard, there is hope for the gaming community yet. -Cerebus
