Bloody, F-bombs, and good music
I approached this game as a gamer looking for a good action game, not as a fan of the series. I had never seen the anime before playing this game, so I figured that would give me an unbiased prospective. I will say this though, Afro Samurai is addictive.
The game follows the storyline of the anime series aired on Spike TV. Afro, the title character making his way to find Justice, the Number One warrior who killed his father, while trying to not get himself killed by everyone who wants his spot as Number Two. The game, as I mention before, is very addictive. Whether it's the story, the music, or just the violent way of combat which usually ends with several severed limbs, this game may keep you entertained.
The controls, especially in combat are surprisingly percise. I was able to easily chop off limbs of the countless enemies I encountered. There is even a minigame focused on that aspect. It is also very engaging with the soundtrack of the game, which was handled masterfully by The RZA just like the series. The musical score really sets the mood for battles, unfortunately you never really are able to beat the faulty camera controls. Many times I have lost track of enemies and even lost sight of my surroundings due to objects being in the way of the camera. It can be a bit chaotic at times, and a bit annoying when you are trying to fight off a large group and you can't see them all due to camera problems. As fun as the fighting is, and even though new enemies appear over time, the combat may becime a bit repeative. There are some RPG elements, however. You gain experience in combat, and with that come new moves and combos, as well as more health, which you will need as the game will through you harder enemies and boss fights that require to think your way through them. On time, it didn't really take me long to beat the game's main story, so you could probabily go through it in one or two sessions. Finally, the voice actors from the series are all present reprising their roles in the game. I swear, it was damn cool to hear Samuel L. Jackson in a video game.
All in all, Afro Samurai is an addicting, fun, fast paced adventure game blending bloody swordplay with hip-hop music. Anyone who liked the anime will enjoy this game, and all others may like the surprising addicting feel of chopping off limbs and deflecting bullets.
