Soul Calibur IV

Soul Calibur IV - PS3

Pros Cons
Innovative concepts Terrible multiplayer
Game 3.0

Soul Calibur IV is a perfect example of the concept that many other developers are integrating in their games. This is game 3.0. Sony gave a keynote about this some time relating to web 3.0 which was a internet that was more user friendly and shaped by their users with social sites like facebook, myspace, digg or youtube where the users are the ones that shape the site. Soul Calibur 4's most important feature is probably the Create a Character. With it you can create your own original character with many choices, characters from movies or games and even yourself(I created a similar guy that looks like me.)

The graphics and gameplay have taken a step up beautifully. The online mode is another plus which allows people to finally play online against each other. The matchmaking features are pretty lacking but you can still get online and play.

It is actually Web 2.0 not Web 3.0. The keynote about Game 3.0 was made at GDC '07, which as you may know, they showcased three games in there, two of them are yet to be released, and frankly, I think HOME and LittleBigPlanet is the true example of this concept, but Soul Calibur IV is a decent jump from previous fighting games. Oh, by the way, nice review.

HORRIBLE ONLINE PLAY....NOT WORTH IT!!!

1. Quick Match never works. This is just a useless feature. Should be replaced with a "filter" so that you can choose the connection of people you want to play against.

2. Custom Match - I only receive someone to play against about 60% of the time. Then when I do, the lag/connection is sooooo poor, that gameplay just becomes frustrating and tiresome.

3. NO REMATCH- horrible, horrible, horrible. Whoever designed the online portion of this game needs to be fired immediately.

4. 80% of the connections I play on are 3 bars, which produce substantial lagtime and horrible gameplay. If im lucky, I get to play someone with 4-5 bars and once the match is over.......well, no rematch. Back to the slow ones again!!

5. Have not tried hosting my own game yet, but out of what I hear from others, the wait can be unbearable. I have yet to try this though.

I have read many forums and threads regarding this issue and it seems that the problem still persists. WTF!!! I have been an avid Soulcalibur fan for ages now and anyone who loves these type of fighting games, loves to play 2P online.

Not having the capability to do this with Soulcalibur is not taking away over half the game. I just can't fathom why programmers would allow this to happen to a game that has so much going for it. I love the finishers, the gameplay, all the extras, customizations, etc. Its truly wonderful, but the online play, to me, is the heart of the game.

Honestly, Im at a standstill right now on whether I want to keep the game around to earn all the extra gifts, honors, and levels, which I will never be able to use online. It's very sad for me to say, but I really don't think I can allow myself to put that much time into a game when the online play isn't there. It's just a waste.

MY 2 CENT.
