World in Conflict

World in Conflict - PC

World in conflict- worth it or not?

I have played both the beta and the demo of this game, and it looks great. It's a unigue twist to the Rts-genre. You'll never guess the setting. Medieval times? World War 2? Another modern RTS? No, my friends. This is about the Cold War. Sounds exciting, right? Well, there really wasnt much physical fighting in the Cold War, so Sierra made a scarily accurate take on what couldve happened if this 'cold' war had gone quote "hot". In World of Conflict, Sierra shows what they think would've happened. In this 'wat-if' scenario, the USSR attack the US Homeland to keep it busy from interfering in Europe, where fighting has already started. In the story mode, you are an un-named [and apparently un-faced> private just starting out. You get 'trained' in a tutorial that teaches you how to use Wic's awesome camera. You can zoom, look around from where you are without actually physically moving side to side, and you can 'attach' the camera to a vehicle or soldier to follow it. After that, in the demo, you are supposed to be defending an un-named coast-line town from the Russians. You don't have to worry about tedious rescource management. Nope. In fact, you dont even have to worry about a base. You jsut start out with reinforcement points. . This is your 'money' for 'buying' new units to be airdropped via parachute to your specifically placeddrop point. Another cool thing: you can change drop points at any point and time in the game. Also, there are both offensive and defensive capabilites of *almost* every unit! Choppers getting attacked by heavy SAMs? Deploy chaff and get the f*ck out of there! getting wasted by oncoming troops? Tell your teamate to deploy smoke over you by using his artillary to barrage you with 'smoke shells' that covers you so you can get out!. There's also offensive abilities like anti tank missles, or order a helicopter to fire a specialized anti tank missle to kill a tank unit faster. Now for the coolest part: Tactical Aid! When you kill units, capture command points [much like in real war> you get 'tac points'. These enable you to call in all kinds of cool stuff like light artiallry barages, napalm, A-10 tank buster strafes, carpet bombing, and of course, a mini [for balanced play> nukes! Now for the game, not the gameplay. The graphics are awesome, even on old computers, especially if you have vista or Dx10. Water perfectly relfects everything. Smoke is realistic with it's advanced soft-particle engine that allows it to flow past things, not jsut through them, like in most games. Also, the extent of units is staggering. There's at least 3 different types for every unit. [ie 3 tanks, 3 helis, etc.> Each one has different strentghs [armor, cheap, good special ability> to negatives [expensive, slow, poor armor>. There are many maps in the final game, up to 22! The multipalyer is easy access and fun because you can jump in without 'building up' first. You also play different roles. Need to hit a lot of guys hard? switch to support, get some arty, and go to work! same with armor, air, and infantry! Also, certain units are logically cheaper than others for some roles [like the armor role having cheaper tanks, duh!>than others. In all, the game is great, easy to learn, but with some difficult controls, awesome graphics, and a crazy awesome camera, multiplayer systems, and a broadcasting tool that lets you control the camera and 'draw' on the screen for tactics during and after the game! You can pull up a sattelite image mini map that is very realistic and easy to use, and you also get replays. You can watch past games to see why you lost, or see how you were lucky enough to win and what you did right. This game is great, and even though i left some details out because i haven't bought it yet, the game looks great from its beta and demo! Game on RTS-sers!
