Command & Conquer: Renegade

Command & Conquer: Renegade - PC

The Little Online Game That Could

Command & Conquer. First thing that comes to mind, RTS. The franchise that brought you smash hits such as Red Alert 2 and Tiberium Sun made... an FPS. Okay, single player. Crap. One-man-army against impossible odds... well, you know the rest. You play "Havoc" (so manly), a GDI Spec OP that has more testosterone than everyone a Gold's Gym combined. "Havoc" decides he should abandon authority and go on a rescue mission all by himself. One thing leads to another and you find yourself trying to bring the entire Brotherhood to its knees. End of story. The game's online experience, on the other hand, is a gem. The main mode, "Command & Conquer" (big surprise there), has you and 31 others teamed up against each other. Each team (GDI and NOD for you noobs out there) has an array of buildings that has its own function. Power plant controls base defenses, Barracks / Hand Of Nod lets you buy special units, Refinery provides money for buy vehicles and units, etc. First team to kill all enemy buildings wins. Simple, right? WRONG. Your opponents will be charging at you with an arsenal of 23 weapons and over 10 vehicles, including snipers, anti-tank rifles, rail guns, rockets, laser weaponry, dune buggies, tanks, Apaches (and Orcas), and the ever-so-popular stealth units. All this mayhem happening at once with 32 people creates a unique gaming experience that will have you hooked instantly. This game gives us a unique look at the Command & Conquer world we already know and love. I give it a 4.5/5 just because the single player was crap, but who cares when you're going to be playing the multiplayer until your life ends.
