Review: Medal of Honor Underground

Following the smashing success of last year's World War II shooter, Underground delves into the French Resistance and comes up with one of the year's best games.

The first thing you notice about Underground is the riveting sounds and graphics, which submerge you in faraway locales. The amazing audio easily ranks among the best ever, featuring compelling ambient effects that bring the levels to life. The highlight, though, is the killer animations. The gameplay is hardly a slacker, either, sizzling with absorbing missions and strong two-player deathmatches. Throughout it all, sleek controls keep you in the thick of battle as Underground makes solid use of the dual analog sticks to smoothly interface the player with the action. Fans of the first Medal will feel right at home with Underground, but the game also delivers enough new touches and surprises to prevent it from becoming merely a copycat sequel.

Graphics: Remarkable animations breathe life into these polygonal Nazis as they scramble for cover or twitch from their wounds. The draw distance is a tad short in some levels, but gorgeous scenery makes ample amends.

Sound: Extraordinary audio amplifies Underground's thrills. The superb ambient sounds, voices, and weapons effects completely immerse you in the action, earning Underground a medal for the best sound in a console game.

Control: Underground's controls are so smooth you don't notice they're there. The dual analog sticks respond flawlessly when moving, looking, aiming, and strafing, and the sniper views are excellent.

Fun Factor: Underground ranks as another masterpiece from DreamWorks and EA. Captivating graphics and sound combine with relentless, addictive action to deliver one of the year's best games.
