989 Sports is giving football fans a lot to root for this fall, with the latest updates to their GameDay and GameBreaker franchises. Here's a little taste of what you can expect.

Groundbreaking Gridiron
The GameDay series has always been a groundbreaker, ever since it debuted with polygonal players and scared EA into shelving Madden '96. Now that the PSX is more or less taxed, the minds at 989 have decided to work on AI. They've talked 17 NFL pros into coming in to make sure the AI doesn't make dumb mistakes. Money plays should be a thing of the past, if GameDay exhibits the smarts they're promising.
Taking advantage of the feedback from last year's title, 989 has decided to make a few other tweaks, as well. They've made the special moves easier to pull off and GameDay 2001 features a bunch of new possibilities, like forcing fumbles, second-wind tackle breaking, and more. A new "Play as Any Skill Player" feature lets you be the running back or receiver, and a detailed create-a-player feature will make sure you always have the best players you can afford.

Breakin' the Game, Breakin' the Game
No matter how good the NFL is, the NCAA's where it gets its talent from, and 989's hoping you'll check out the future of football in GameBreaker 2001. All 115 NCAA Division 1-A teams are here, complete with college fight songs and stadiums. You'll be able to recruit your freshmen based on your past record and your school's reputation in the Career mode, and build up your win-loss with plays created by real NCAA coaches and players.
????? Every college team has a "gamebreaker," or a real-life hero who's already earmarked for the pros, and GameBreaker 2001 takes that into account by marking one of your players as exceptional. Get the ball to that guy and watch him go; you'll notice a real difference in control as the real men take the field. College gridiron heroes like Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne pitched in with their input to make this game's AI better than ever. You'll have a real fight on your hands if you want to stay at the top.

Wrapping It Up
No one knows which football titles will tackle the turf this year, but these two from 989 are looking good. We'll have to see what EA Sports puts together to combat 989's attack when we see Madden 2001 later this year.
