Review: Justice League Heroes

The PSP version of Justice League: Heroes is an excellent handheld version of the game that leapt onto the home consoles earlier this year, save for one glaring omission: A lack of wireless multiplayer.

It's baffling why this isn't an option as beat 'em ups like this are so much more fun with a friend. Regardless, there is still fun to be had here but it's unfortunate that you'll have to settle for an AI partner in a human one.

The Superest of Friends

Anyone familiar with Snowblind's Champions of Norrath or Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance will immediately feel at home with Justice League Heroes. As with those other action RPGs, you pummel enemies to get experience and upgrade your abilities. However, unlike those other games, your team is mostly hand-picked for you, forcing you to use characters you either don't like or that you haven't been spending upgrades on. It's a rather limited design decision that hinders gameplay. I understand that it was done so that some of the CG cutscenes could be character specific, but I don't find it worth the trade off.

The game looks great on the PSP's widescreen, with faithfully translated graphics that rarely experience any slowdown. The excellent CG cutscenes flesh out the game's decent plot and set you up for the mission to come. The environments are varied and pleasing to the eye while character animations are fantastic and fluid. The controls are great as well, though you'll probably experience some thumb cramps during extended play sessions.

Justice League Heroes does a good job of bringing DC heroes into the now standardized 3D action/RPG super hero genre. It doesn't do anything new or better than previous entries, but if you really like the DC universe this is obviously your game. The PSP version is as good as its console counterparts except for the criminal lack of multiplayer options. If you can stomach the thought of taking on the forces of evil without a human sidekick, then this is definitely a game you should buy.
