Metal Gear Acid

Solid Snake plays a card-collecting game to infiltrate a research station in Metal Gear Acid, possibly the trippiest installment in the renowned stealth series.

The Metal Gear series traditionally mixes creepy storylines with tight stealth gameplay, so it's natural that some fans may be confused to learn that Solid Snake's latest mission will require decks of cards to complete, much like Magic: The Gathering. Risk is a key element to excitement in this genre; players get out of dangerous situations by thinking on their feet. When that dynamic becomes turn-based, much of the adrenaline leaks out and the pace slows to a crawl.

Still, Konami deserves recognition for tailoring the new Metal Gear game for the new console when so many other PSP launch titles are merely miniaturized versions of big-screen games. Wireless multiplayer mode (only available in the U.S. version) pits two players head-to-head, but this option is unlockable only after several hours of play (that may be too long for many players).

Ultimately, Metal Gear Acid remains an intriguing--and flawed--niche title.
