Ridge Racer

Adrenaline-pumped racing to a cheesy dance track: great visuals, smooth controls, solid, if simple, gameplay.

Racing games are all the same--which makes them either timeless or boring, depending on your point of view. Namco's Ridge Racer for the PSP, though, is everything racing fans could want: solid graphics, tight controls, expansive courses, unlockable secret vehicles, and (of course) the multiplayer option.

While the physics of the game have improved greatly from R: Racing Evolution, Namco's 2003 foray into racing simulation games, Ridge Racer still has that arcade touch of unrealism that keeps it fun. Cars can't take damage, no matter how fast they're going, and achieving drift is simply epic. The fact that it's handheld means speed addicts won't be able to keep their hands off it. And for a hint of old-school, you can access the original arcade game through the options menu. If you score high enough, you'll be able to unlock a special car. Start your engines.
