Review: Wild ARMs XF

Wild Arms is a well-established RPG franchise, one which I've faithfully followed since day one. The series makes the leap into the tactical RPG realm with XF; unfortunately, things get a little lost in the transition and several issues keep this title from reaching the high bar set by its predecessors.

While most tactical RPG games focus on the battles, XF features a surprisingly strong story that is rife with political intrigue and character development. All of the characters are likable and I really cared about what they were going though. It's just a shame that the actual core of the game-the combat-is so weak in comparison. Many of the plot-driven battles are tedious affairs that will test your patience-you'll be stuck fighting the same battles again and again as you avoid battles and search for the right path though the field.

The side effect of this means that any character leveling must be done in side battles that do not progress the storyline; this may appeal to hardcore level grinders who don't mind fighting battles just to gain experience points but most gamers will find it tedious. Wild Arms XF does do a good job handling classes, but there is little reason to switch character jobs outside of the plot driven battles.

Still, the hex-based grid system that governs the battlefield works well and the game's presentation is top-notch, with eye-catching graphics and pleasing sound effects. The voice-over work, especially, is well done. Unfortunately, the core gameplay itself left me wanting more. There's no doubt that Wild Arms XF is best left for hardcore fans of the series who will probably be more forgiving of the game's faults; the rest of you should look elsewhere for your tactical RPG fix

Pros: Great sound track and voice acting. Well written storyline shines.
Cons: Repetitive and infuriating gameplay; combat is definitely a weak spot.
