First Look: Untold Legends: The Warrior's Code
SOE ups the hack-n' slash ante , sans the hefty load times.
Frankly put, Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade was rickety. It bore the burden of being one of the first PSP launch titles last March, thus soaking up all the early PSP loading and performance issues. It wasn't a bad game, necessarily, but it was a slow, simple hack-and-slash that just couldn't quite catch up with Sony's powerful new hardware.
Now a year later, and with some handheld experience under its belt, Sony Online Entertainment bounces back with Untold Legends: The Warrior's Code. Set in the original Untold Legends universe, The Warrior's Code sports an entirely new story with fresh characters and a completely revamped art style highlighted by a more cartoonish vibe. The new 3D engine has been built entirely from scratch and, fortunately, does not harbor the same laggy refresh issues of the first game.
By far, the biggest change is the introduction of shape-shifting characters that can briefly transform into ultra-destructive uber-beasts. Each of the five character classes--disciple, guardian, mercenary, prowler, and scout--have unique sets of secondary abilities that are easily learned through auto-upgrade. There are oodles of added enemies, new combat moves and spells, and a dozen boss battles in all-new multilayered environments. And, in addition to a four-player Ad-Hoc mode, Sony Online promises support for Internet-based Infrastructure play in The Warrior's Code. With specifics yet to come, we can surely expect some juicy CTF and deathmatch goodness.
