Preview: Jackass: The Game

A kick to the junk from the comfort of your own home.

You know, thinking about the Jackass series and how long it's actually been around now, I'm consistently boggled that frontman Johnny Knoxville is still involved. I guess from a monetary standpoint, Jackass is still a cash cow--especially considering the success of the two movies. But since Knoxville has gone to big-screen recognition, it's shocking that he still risks that movie-quality mug of his on stunts that could potentially maim his career. Now that's dedication.

The latest installment of the Jackass series is coming to the PS2, PSP and DS this Sept. 25. It's the usual onslaught of ridiculous stunts, pranks and overall crotch-tingling indecency that you'd expect from the rest of the series. But, of course, it's a video game so you get to participate, sans the actual physical pain.

There are dozens of stunts that revolve around Knoxville bringing the cast back together for another season of the show. The goal is to perform bone-breaking stunts to get the attention of the rest of the cast--you remember Wee Man and Pontius, right?--to suck them back into the show. But, there's one problem. The director gets injured during a stunt, so you're called in to direct the hilarity and guaranteed injuries.

The bonus that the game brings, stunt-wise, is that you get to do things that could never be pulled off in a real-life episode because, well, people would die. Along these lines is a human slingshot into the neighbor's pool, rolling in a trash can through traffic down a steep hill in San Francisco and even more suicidal things that involved fire and body parts. There are dozens of stunts and also Wee Games, mini-games that are more simplistic.

Stunts raise cash (injuries mean money multipliers), and that allows you to complete the filming of an episode and move on. So technically you don't have to complete every stunt to finish the shoot. Money can also buy you new stunt props and ridiculous outfits for the cash.

On the PSP, online multiplayer is no doubt the game's best feature, which allows players to save replays of their stunts and edit them with multiple camera angles in what's called the Jackass Director mode. You'll mix together six stunt replays to create an entire episode, then upload and share it online. There will also be new stunts available in the future for download. It's a big endeavor for the PSP, but video sharing is definitely where it's at and even home console games are just starting to do it.
