Review: Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds

Hot Shots Golf 3: Out of Bounds is a fun take on videogame golf. The addition of some arcade style wackiness to what some might consider a less-than-exciting sport makes for a game that can be difficult to put down. What makes this game so successful is that the fun, animated tone is used to enhance a solid game instead of covering up a flawed one.

Utilizing a new golf-stroke system, Hot Shots Golf has managed to put a little bit more control into the player's hands. Although you are given the option of using it, Hot Shots Golf 3 has replaced the usual strength and accuracy meters with a more refined approach. Clicking a button initiates a backstroke and clicking the button again at the right moment will reverse the motion of the swing. A small, shrinking circle will appear around your golf ball, and the smaller the circle is around the ball when you click the button the more likely you are to hit the sweet spot. It only takes a few tries to get the hang of. Beyond that, it won't take more than a few holes to learn to compensate for wind and other factors. The real challenge of Hot Shot Golf's is refining your game bit by bit.

There are six courses, which doesn't seem like much. But all of them are large and beautiful, and full of sharp details. Although you can't really customize players, Hot Shot Golf does have some extras to keep you interested. There are 15 players to choose from and you can even pick from 6 caddies. Winning a tournament will allow you to choose prizes like new clubs and golf balls. One of the more interesting aspects of this game is the way ties are broken. A running tally of points is taken as you play. You can score points by landing good shots or getting birdies and pars. If there's a tie, the player with the most points is the winner.

This game is definitely a winner because it's done a great job of balancing fun animation and serious gameplay.

Pros: Addictive, laid-back, looks great
Cons: It's Golf, not enough courses
