Sony's banking on two new racers to showcase the real power of the PS3. We pin both games head to head!
Sony is banking on two racing games to be the first real showoffs of the PlayStation 3's power. In a ritzy, A-list celebrity club in Hollywood, Sony showed the latest progress of MotorStorm and Formula 1: Championship Edition, the former an off-road testosterone display and the latter a semi-realistic representation of F1 racing. Sony has released playable demo versions of each game on the PLAYSTATION store, so if you have a PS3, get moving!
While two very different games in terms of content, what both are trying to accomplish for the PS3 is the same: showcase its raw power. So we're matching both games up, side by side, to see just what the two are going to offer come March.
General Gameplay
MotorStorm's crashes are extremely fun to witness
MotorStorm: I hate to use clich? adjectives, but this game screams adrenaline-fueled. Think Burnout but with off-road vehicles in the dirt combined with some of the most realistic graphics even seen on a console system. The objective is to win by any means necessary, so bashing your opponent off a cliff while you round one of the game's common hairpin turns is completely encouraged. That's what makes the game so fun. It's a do-as-you-please-racer-that is minimalist in terms of management, but takes a heck of a lot of skill to cross the finish line in the 1 slot.
Rough weather makes F1 tracks super slick
F1: Though it's going for a more arcade-y experience than past F1 games, F1: Championship Edition is still going to be a simulation of the sport of F1. The game is based on the 2006 season, containing all of the events, drivers, and teams of the real sport. Developer SCE Liverpool is promoting a "F1 for everyone" type of experience, mainly because F1 games haven't done that well in the US market (more of a European thing). So the non-F1 enthusiast can have fun with the game with little to no knowledge of the sport itself while playing less attention to the fine details in driving an F1 car.
Story
MotorStorm: Centered around a fictional gathering called the MotorStorm Festival, fans arrive in the desert to watch the insane display of races that the player will partake in. It's definitely not the driving force of the game, just a way to lay out the races so it doesn't look like a big clumpy mess.
F1: There isn't really a story in F1, per se, but the game is centered around the 2006 race season...and there's a career mode. That's something, right?
Tracks
Need we say more?
MotorStorm: Set in a treacherous desert environment, races take place in dangerous dirt terrain with often fickle weather. Because the game uses Havoc physics, it's not unusual that a single rock can send your high-speed vehicle into a death spin. So you'll need to use boost as well as caution when taking the suicide turns that can easily lead you right off the edge. There are different paths you can take that are determined by what type of vehicle you are driving. For example, taking the high route in a bike just might be a great way to get a jump on the competition.
Wheel gone, race over
F1: Even though it's geared to be somewhat of an arcade experience, Formula 1 is set in circuit tracks on real-world courses. Not too exciting, but then again, F1 is not about the creativity of the tracks as it is about the difficulty of moving up in the ranks.
