Will the creators of Spyro the Dragon and Ratchet & Clank deliver the PS3's first killer app?
Resistance: Fall of Man, Insomniac's launch title for the PlayStation 3, was a crowd-pleaser at E3 with some fantastic eye candy and a lot of promises based on the developer's excellent reputation. The curtain finally fell on Resistance in Insomniac's Burbank offices, and early indication is that those promises have been fulfilled--and then some.
Starting Anew
Building on a sprawling mythology that will lay the groundwork for an ongoing franchise, Resistance chronicles an alternative timeline where World War II never occurred. Instead, a far more dire threat than the Nazi party rose from Europe: An apparent Russian biological experiment gone wrong that spread through the Eastern Hemisphere over a dozen years before encroaching on Britain's border. The details of this experiment and its result, a new race of monstrous creatures called the Chimera, will be unveiled over the course of Resistance and future titles.
The fire is pretty, but the shadow is prettier!
This first game unfolds through the narration of a beautiful British science officer, Rachel Parker, as she tries to piece together the fate of a US Soldier, Nathan Hale. Hale was part of a US contingent sent to help defend Britain's borders, and apparently the first human to resist the Chimera's conversion process.
That conversion process, along with several of Resistance's fantastic weapons and locations, were recently revealed to us for the first time. It seems the Chimera use roach-like bugs to infest a human body, which then forms a cocoon as it transforms into a Chimera/Human hybrid. The hybrids, the main enemy of the game and a playable multiplayer race, can go into rage mode, where they inflict more damage and move faster, but rage creates overheating, which leads to self-inflicted damage. Hybrids are fitted with built-in cooling units by the Chimera as soon as they emerge from their cocoons.
