Preview: Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe
Mortal Kombat goes all graphic novel with Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.
In a surprise move, Midway has announced that Mortal Kombat 8 will actually be a spin-off game entitled "Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe." It will feature Mortal Kombat heroes and villains tackling DC Comics superheroes.
As for the storyline, details are scarce (hint: it involves magic) so we'll let Midway's press release handle the hard work:
"When a cataclysmic force merges conquerors from two universes, conflict is inevitable. Kombat forces friends to fight, worlds to collide, and unlikely alliances to be forged. In order to save all they know, the heroes and villains of Mortal Kombat must wage war against the combined might of the DC Universe. How can either side prevail when rage blinds them to the dark threat poised to destroy them all?"
Confirmed characters are limited to just four, for now: ninjas Scorpion and Sub-Zero represent the Mortal Kombat side, while Batman and (a not-yet-seen) Superman round out the DC Comics side. Other characters are sure to be announced soon (Midway says "other iconic and powerful DC Super Heroes" are coming soon), as MK vs. DC is scheduled to hit the PS3 and Xbox 360 this fall. A GameSpot writer mentions that the game has "two separate storylines," from both perspectives, which collectively lays out a bigger storyline.
The game is a confirmed Teen rating, which makes the bloodier MK Fatality moves off-limits. In talks with the press, Midway has repeatedly confirmed that Sub-Zero will not be ripping out Superman's spine in MK vs. DC. But gorehounds needn't give up all hope, as Midway is pledging to push the Teen envelope as far as possible: that means decent blood spatters and bone-crunching special moves. Midway representatives also suggested that the camera would zoom in close to highlight particularly agonizing blows, ala Fight Night Round 3. There will also be some sort of "finishing moves," but these will not be as violent as the Fatalities found in prior MK games.
