Preview: Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (Page 2 of 2)
Simply breathtaking
The City
The city is huge, vertically speaking. When Ratchet is using jump pads to launch above, you get a sense of just how high the city goes. You can see lots of buildings and other objects below.
On a bridge above, Ratchet moves across to the right in a side-scrolling, top-down challenge.
Freefalling. Ratchet is falling from above, and we use the Sixaxis tilt control to steer him below to safety.
It's another cut scene. Looks like a boss. He has 4 giant robotic legs, but a whole robotic armada stands in our way first. While on a rail, trains are bearing down on him, and robot spaceships are shooting lasers. Ratchet hops from rail to rail until he reaches the boss platform. That's where this level ends.
As in previous Ratchet games, there is space shooting.
Space Shooting
The other gameplay sequence shown is a spaceship segment where Ratchet is shooting down space pirates. It's very retro, and something that's been in every Ratchet game in some fashion. It's much more graphically impressive running on the PS3. The goal this time was to keep these segments very action-based. Here, Ratchet and Clank are shooting at a cool-looking small moon and Clank is manning the turret.
Closing Commentary
A couple of Insomniac reps chatted with us a little about the tech behind the game. The physics engine is very advanced, and the game is meant to be very fast-paced. The game will retain the same humor as the previous game. "It might make you laugh out loud, and we definitely don't take ourselves too seriously."
Clank has a bigger part in the story this time. "He's a robot with a soul." He has new super abilities. "That's all we can say."Shucks.
Just look at that detail
