Preview: Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
Ratchet & Clank for PS3 is looking fantastic. It just might make that $600 PS3 purchase a little easier to swallow.
With Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, developer Insomniac says it wants to take the game back to the essence of the series that many fans wanted, and focus on the single-player mode rather than trying to do so many different things at once. That means no multiplayer folks.
Here are the team's four goals for the game: variety, mystery, adventure and spectacle.
yes, robotic fish. Were you expecting anything less?
In the demo, there is a lot of variety. Combat to platforming with lots of different control modes.
The demo:
Opens with a video of Ratchet and Clank arguing about a blown engine. Enter, Qwark on a video phone. He's in trouble. It's heavily armed robotic commandos. Not again!
The duo is off even though the spaceship is pretty much out of control. It slams into a wall and R&C fall down below. Good time to try out the new nav system.
Everything in Metropolis in beautifully rendered. The city looks so much better than it did in previous games. It's really impressive.
Drophyds are a new batch of enemies. They're fish, and flop out of their protective robotic shell when Ratchet gives 'em the old wrench attack.
Ratchet launches above. Time for the Groovitron. This bad boy makes enemies dance, giving Ratchet some extra time to get the jump on them.
Fusion grenade thrown, a nice little explosion takes out enemies.
Ratchet jumps onto a nearby rail. He must hop over obstacles on his way down the long and winding path. Once below, Ratchet uses the Groovitron again. There are rumors of the Moonwalk down the road, copyright infringement to follow.
Transmorpher. A weapon that finally turns enemies into harmless, lovable penguins. Someone's been listening to me! Ratchet turns the cute penguins into dancers with the Groovitron. Hilarious
Enemy robots doing the robot [dance]? You better believe it. With the Groovitron, any nimble dance move seems feasible.
Ratchet & Clank will battle more enemies than ever in this, their biggest adventure.
