Feature: Dragon Balls and RPGs - Atari Unveils E3 Assets
Atari releases new screens for Super Dragon Ball Z, Neverwinter Nights 2, and more in anticipation of E3.
Kicking off even more Pre-E3 excitement, today Atari released brand-new screenshots of their upcoming titles that will be showcased next week at the E3 Expo in Los Angeles. Click the links below to view each title's new screenshots.
Alone in the Dark
The classic survival horror franchise that started it all is back and looking better than ever for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. Today Atari announced that the game will be episodic, with each episode clocking in at about 30-40 minutes. While it might seem to be a strange move on Atari's part, there seems to be some method to their madness. By breaking the game in to episodes, they hope to keep gamers coming back for more terrifying action throughout the lifecycle of the title.
The game centers on the character Edward Carnby, who franchise fans will remember as the hero from the very first Alone in the Dark game. How Carnby, who played the hero in the first game (that took place in the 1920's) ended up in modern-day New York City will be just one of the many intriguing plot twists for this new installment. Despite the twisty storyline, gamers can still expect a healthy mix of puzzle-solving, exploration, and melee combat. Match those features with the game's decidedly next-generation visuals and you've got a game that's shaping to take the horror genre in some seriously cool directions.
Dungeons & Dragons Tactics
The world of Dungeons & Dragons goes tactical in Atari's upcoming PSP game, where players take a team of up to six characters through a wide number of different dungeons. Hardcore D&D fans will be happy to see the main classes and races accounted for, including two Psionic classes. Each character will also be heavily customizable, giving you an immense amount of freedom in creating and outfitting them.
To keep the game from devolving in to a mundane turn-based bore-fest, the game will feature an engrossing new storyline that takes place in a number of familiar D&D locales. These environments will also be filled with dangerous creatures taken from the popular franchise. If you've got some friends looking for some dungeon-crawling action, the game will also include wirelessly cooperative and multiplayer gameplay.
Super Dragon Ball Z
Proving that no one gamer can ever get too many doses of Dragon Balls, Atari is about to pummel the PS2 with Super Dragon Ball Z, the newest installment in this highly popular fighting series. The game will feature an all-new fighting system, thanks to the input by some of the creators of the original and highly acclaimed Street Fighter II arcade game. Your favorite fighters (13 in all) will each have ultra-powerful and unique special attacks, as well as blistering combo attacks for laying the smack down on their opponents.
The game will focus heavily on speeding up the fighting action, which in part will include more reliance on using your environment during a fight. Fighting will also now be fully 3D and take part on the ground and in the air, adding a new dimension to every single battle.
Neverwinter Nights 2
The long-awaited sequel to Neverwinter Nights is finally almost here and going straight to the classic RPG roots that made it such a success. Once again players will explore the Forgotten Realms, where tensions have mounted between the city-states of the Sword Coast have escalated to frightening level. While the city-states squabble over trifle matters, a new evil dubbed the Mere of Dead Men have begun to amass an enormous army with one goal -- conquer the Forgotten Realms.
Perhaps most exciting about this highly anticipated sequel is the new Obsidian Neverwinter Nights 2 Toolset, which allows games to create their own quests, share them with friends, and even play through your creation as a Dungeon Master. The game also supports online player, letting you experience the Forgotten Realms with others adventurers from around the globe.
While Neverwinter Nights 2 may be a bit off in terms of release (Fall of 2006), so far it's shaping up to be one of the best looking PC RPG titles of E3.
Atari also plans to show off the following titles at this year's E3 Expo. Stay tuned to Gamepro.com as we update these future titles with brand-new screens soon.
