Sony Divulges Info on Next Generation Chip and Game Console

PS3 chip information and general timeline announced

Sony has announced at the SEAJ conference that their ?Cell? chip, manufactured in conjunction with Toshiba and IBM, will start mass production at the end of 2005. The chip is Sony?s next-generation MPU and will power the PS3, as well as computer servers and mobile devices. Sony Computer Entertainment?s (SCE) president Ken Kutaragi stated that a protype version of the ?Cell? chip will be available by the year?s end.

Kenshi Manabe, SCE?s Chief Technology Officer stated that the next-generation console will not simply be a game console as the PS2, but will be a ?computer entertainment? system, emphasizing network gaming and broadband data exchange. However, given that online gaming has not caught on as expected in Japan, Sony does not yet decided on a concrete direction for the PS3. Manabe also stated that since there?s the possibility of the market drying up for the PS2 in the near future, they will begin discussing strategies for the PS3 from 2004-2006.

Does this mean that a PS3 may be on the horizon in 2006? We?ll give you more details as they come.
