Zone of the Enders hit the stores earlier this week with a very special bonus; the Demo disc of this year?s most anticipated PlayStation 2 title, Metal Gear Solid 2. Hot tips on how to be a top ranked player inside.
It?s hard to deny the lure and power of the first chance to play Metal Gear Solid 2, even if it?s just a demo?and as far as demos go, MGS2 is one of the most comprehensive packages around. You can play it in a very straightforward way, or you can spend days messing with all the cool little details that are waiting to be found. And, if you?re feeling competitive, the best way to enjoy it is to compete in the Internet Rankings.
Internet Rankings
As if there aren?t enough cool ways to play the MGS 2 demo, Konami has added an Internet Ranking system, which gives you a passcode that rates how well you did. Simply finish the demo and the "clear code" for your game will be presented. Go to www.kcej.com and you?ll see a MGS2 Internet ranking banner. The text link BELOW that banner will take you to the English page.
The following starter guide will help you shave seconds from your game and give you an idea of the many possible ways to get a better score. It is not meant as the be all and end all of getting the best time?there are definitely ways to squeeze out better records that will reveal themselves as time goes by. Already from around the world are experimenting with new ways, so try your best.
The passcode you get and the score you receive is based on many variables and I?ll go over each of them:
Total Play Time
When it comes down to it, this is the most important thing to garner a higher score. The faster you can play through it, the better your score. If you get the same score as someone else, the other variables come into play.
Radar Type
Don?t even think about playing the game with the radar on unless you don?t mind being a sucka.
Bullets Fired
It?s possible to finish the game with as little as three, but you trade valuable seconds. Four seems to be the number the top players stick to.
Alert Mode
Suffice it to say getting caught by the soldiers is not a smart idea. In the Very Hard mode your game is instantly over if this happens. The best advice is that if you?re detected, just hit reset and start over. Remember, a red exclamation point is when you?ve been detected while the green one just means that the guards think there?s something fishy going on. The green one does not count against you in the scoring.
Damage Rate, Enemies Killed and Continues
It?s possible to get a decent ranking with a great time and not being super perfect with the previous three variables, but doing any of these things guarantees you?ll be an also ran.
The Rankings are divided into eight different categories, which covers all regions of the world including an all-encompassing global ranking. Within these are subcategories of age and gender, which are meant to give everyone a fair shake. Obviously, you can keep track of your place globally, but for the most part you?ll want to keep track of the standings in North America.
Game mode tips
OK, let?s get to it then. The most popular modes for competition are Very Easy, Normal, and Very Hard so we?ll just focus on the specifics of those. Very Easy and Normal mode share many of the same characteristics so they?ll be covered in the same area with slight differences explained. Very Hard gets it?s own section, but many of the later elements are for the most part the same so they will point you back to the Very Easy/Normal notes.
