Time to Roll Out the Mats!
PROTIP: In Stellar Master Mode, combine different goals into one song and unlock things faster!
All of your favorite tried-and-true game modes return in SuperNOVA. Arcade, Workout, and Training mode let you hop your way through the songs while Edit, Online and Link to Arcade modes allow you to create your own steps and challenge others online and at the arcade.
New to the game is the "Stellar Master Mode" in which players travel from planet to planet, playing songs and meeting goals that the game puts forth. The first few planets are easy and introduce beginners to basic DDR techniques. The subsequent set of planets raises the bar and asks for players to perfect their movements and meet increasingly difficult targets in terms of score, modifiers, roulette manipulation, and more.
These objectives can be an enticing challenge for the dedicated player, but they may prove tedious and exasperating for the casual player, especially as the complexity increases.
Shiny Things Distract Me
PROTIP: Rack up points in Arcade mode to buy what you've unlocked.
Thankfully, you'll have plenty of eye candy to look at while you're tripping your way through the songs. SuperNOVA features character animations that are much smoother than past editions, and each character has a distinct dance style. The backgrounds are diverse, ranging from psychedelic scenes to actual music videos to Japanese anime-style movies. The song list is staggering as it brings in both new songs and old favorites. Plus, there's a ton of unlockables available to ensure that your feet never get bored.
While SuperNOVA is more of the same idea, it takes everything that made DDR a smash hit and turns up the volume a notch. Long-time fans of the DDR series should grab this game and roll out the mats for some exhausting fun.
PROTIP: What's better than Perfect? "Marvelous" can be turned on in the options menu.
