Sony's GameDay 2001 missed the PS2 kickoff on October 26th, but it has taken the field with the same spirit as the PlayStation version of GameDay.

Sony's GameDay 2001 missed the PS2 kickoff on October 26th, but it has taken the field with the same spirit as the PlayStation version of GameDay. In fact, PSX GameDay veterans will notice a lot of similarities between the two. GameDay has always seemed to be chasing EA's Madden games, and this GameDay is no exception, but it still shows some spark, and manages to be a fun mix of football action.

You can adjust the CPU IQ, ratings for passing, defense, game speed, and other options on slider bars with five distinct settings, but establishing a consistent running game is tough, and the game definitely favors a passing offense. The framerate is quite high (Sony claims 60 FPS) but a good number of the animations aren't linked together well, and there's a noticeable pause between hits and tackle animations. Still, GameDay scores some points for a solid game options and a larger than life style that injects more action into the gridiron game.

Graphics
Some of the tackle and special move animations are great, and the framerate is solid, but the animations aren't linked together well.

Sound
Commentary from Phil Simms and Dick Enberg runs hot and cold, and the player trash talking doesn't really fit.

Control
Great set of controls that's a bit complex, but lets you deliver precision strikes and over-the-top tackles. A solid set of options rounds out the package.

Fun Factor
GameDay adds more wild action to football than most other games, and manages to be a promising rookie on the PS2.
