Review: NBA Live 2001

EA Sports brings their hoops franchise to the PS2 with NBA Live 2001. It looks fantastic, but does it have all the moves that the PSX version has? Check out the review to find out.

NBA Live 2001 slams onto the PS2 with amazing visuals and a great soundtrack, but it?s filled with small gameplay glitches that break the realistic flow of the hoops action. The problems are minor, however, and Live is still the cream of the PS2 hoops crop. Thanks to the graphical power of Sony?s new system, EA Sports has taken video gamers closer than ever to the real-life pro sports action. In NBA Live 2001 they deliver amazingly detailed players and arenas as well as all of the away-from-the-ball action that you?d expect to see in the NBA game of the week on NBC or TNT. Along with that, they?ve included most of the things that make NBA Live the best hoops franchise on the PS one?realistic A.I., accurate commentary, and a deep season mode, along with classic players and one-on-one action.

But Live 2001 is still a first-generation game, and this shows more and more as you play the game?it?s just not as smooth and fun to play as its PSX counterpart. So look out for Live 2002, but as for this year, the best pro basketball game out there is still?hands-down?NBA 2K1 for the Dreamcast, which delivers in all the places where Live PS2 stumbles.
