Review: Warship Gunner 2
KOEI heads back to the water with their naval-based game Warship Gunner 2.
In case you missed the original, think back to the game we all used to play in the bathtub as kids...not that one you degenerate! The other one with toy ships that you pitted against each other, and the game that is essentially the inspiration for Warship Gunner 2.
Knowledge is Power Off
Unlike the first game, Naval Ops: Warship Gunner, all of the missions in this game do not take place during World War II, but follow the storyline of a fictional present day world where an extremist military organization is fighting towards world domination. In order to defeat them, you must suffer through lengthy tutorials on ship customization and maneuvering, just so you will be able to hold your own in sea combat. I suppose you could just skip it all and figure out the mechanics of the game as you go along, but you probably won't get far.
Once you get past the all of the knowledge you must soak up to play this game, and the out of place manga cutscenes, Warship Gunner 2 actually becomes quite fun. You can blast airplanes out of the sky, torpedo battleships, drop mines on submarines, etc. But it's a limited appeal. And I have a hard time seeing anyone loving the game 30 levels into it.
Operation Ugly
The major drawback of WG2 is that the game could have been accomplished on a PlayStation. Being a PS2 game, the detail on ships and overall graphics are not up to scratch. I would have liked to have seen more varied missions, maybe even some little men running around decks.
If you're a fan of the original, or just enjoy military simulation games, the game is worth picking up. Otherwise, rent before you shell out forty bucks.
