Fatal Frame III: The Tormented

Welcome to the Manor of Sleep...

If you have a bladder control problem, you may want to double up on your diapers if you decide to play Tecmo's Fatal Frame III: The Tormented. Whether with its spine-chilling sound or terrifying visuals, the game is bound to scare you to the bone.

The Manor of Sleep
Heroines tend to come with some baggage and Fatal Frame III's Rei is no exception. After the untimely death of her fiancé, she begins to have strange dreams where she's trapped in a mysterious place called the Manor of Sleep. It's just too bad that the house is filled with terrifying ghosts and a mysterious woman covered in sprawling blue tattoos.

Point-and-Shoot Combat
One of the mainstays of the Fatal Frame franchise is the unique combat system that has you capturing the images of ghosts using a mystical camera. That system is, for the most part, unchanged in this installment, although you will get to try out a few new power-up functions. If you're a fan of the older games, the camera-based combat should be right up your alley.

The really innovative addition to Fatal Frame III is the inclusion of three playable characters, each with their own unique storylines. Besides the main character, Rei, you'll get to play as Miku from the first Fatal Frame, as well as Kei, a friend of Rei's deceased fianc?. Each character's storyline lets you play in unique areas specific to them, which really adds a nice deal of variety to the overall game.

The only real drawback to the game seems to come in its attempt at trying to break up the storyline by making exploration more episodic. Instead of just playing through one long campaign, you'll constantly shuffle between the real world and the Manor of Sleep as you try to unravel clues as to the origin of the ghastly abode. While it's an interesting idea, the abrupt changes in pace really kills the excitement level.
