Rock On!
The premise behind Guitar Hero is simple: using a guitar-shaped controller, press fret buttons and hit a strum bar along with on-screen notes that constantly whiz by. For added style, you can riff on a whammy bar to alter longer notes and give them a bit more pizzazz. The harder the difficulty level, the more notes saturate the screen and the more overtime your fingers have to put in.
To keep things interesting, and your fingers from falling off, Guitar Hero packs in an amazing 30 licensed tracks, including tunes from the likes of Jimi Hendrix, the prince of darkness himself Ozzy Osborne, and more current acts like Sum 41. The game also includes a ton of completely original songs put together by Harmonix, giving you a wide number of tunes to choose from. You can even pick from a number of different character avatars and buy real life licensed guitars to belt your tunes out on in the game.
As Your Guitar Gently Weeps
If you can manage to shell out the money for a second guitar controller, you and a friend can strum along together in some multiplayer action, which is highly addictive and pretty darn competitive, too. Both the single and multiplayer modes will keep you busy for hours, but it would have been nice to see a track editor or online play included to give the overall experience a bit more depth.
If you love quirky music games, you owe it to yourself to pick up Guitar Hero. Besides the enormous song library, you get an incredibly fun controller that helps make you feel like you're really rocking the Casbah to a sold-out audience. Your fingers might not be able to keep up at times, but you'll still keep rocking out without a care.
