Review: Nano Breaker

Nano Breaker just doesn't compel even the casual action gamer.

It's a tried-and-true killer formula: Big sword-swinging maneuvers plus lots of bone-crushing bad guys equals a constant barrage of thumb-numbing action. Unfortunately, it's clear that this formula isnt fully utilized with Nano Breaker.

True Colors

Why is it that machines just don't like humans? Nano technology is all the rage in Nano Breaker's world, but somewhere in the evolution of the machines, they gained a conscious and are now waging war against their creators. This is where you come in--a plasma sword-wielding badass who knows how to destroy such technological abominations. You collect power-ups and other special abilities to help you form the most deadly strikesyou can even customize your button combinations for a loaded offense.

There is no such thing as extreme prejudice on this battlefield. Waves of nano-infused monsters come at you in all directions, and the only thing to do is kill them. Mondo swipes and slashes cause dear pain to your opponents as gallons upon gallons of what Konami labels "oil" (although the default color is red) spurt out, leaving a huge, unsettling puddle of liquid behind after a fatal hit. This, sadly, is the high point in Nano Breakereverything else falls gravely short of disappointing.

Nano Nonsense

Repetition can only go so far. Such is the case in Nano Breaker, where every single level (albeit designed slightly different) consists of the same repetitious gameplayhacking and slashing your way to victory. Some simple-minded puzzles break up the monotony just for a bit, but even then its not very fun. The levels themselves are blandly decorated with not much detail, and the mellow tunes just dont fit the mood of the game.

No one wins in this tale about man versus machine. Nano Breaker is a brainless, gratuitous gashingfest that means well but just doesn't play well.
