Review: FIFA 2002

Soccer games have practically been defined by the FIFA series, and EA Sports? newest footballer shows no signs of letting that legacy falter.

As always, FIFA delivers more teams than you?ve probably ever heard of: over 500 total, including more than 175 national squads and the full-season schedules for 16 leagues ranging from the MLS to the English Premier League. You can tackle the World Cup 2002 Qualifications, play through tournaments like the EFA Trophy, and create your own players, teams, leagues, and cups.

It?s hard to imagine a more exhaustive features lineup, but the really interesting part of FIFA 2002 is its new passing system. Instead of rubberbanding the ball on preset paths between teammates, you can pass the ball anywhere?even into open space to set up a mate taking a run. If you?re used to old-school passing, this new approach is really tricky to learn, but it pays off with much deeper, more realistic control. Tighter tackling and much improved ball physics also make the gameplay feel more authentic?and exciting.

Although most camera angles make you have to squint to see it, FIFA is an absolutely gorgeous game, packing in fantastic animations, lavish player models, and stadiums with cool details like flags waving in the stands. The audio is also very strong but less dazzling, featuring a pair of British commentators and solid but minimal sound effects. If you have anything more than a faint interest in soccer, pick up a copy of FIFA 2002. This fine game is worth every cent.
