Namco's latest Tales RPG saga is set to serve up another delicious RPG experience.
Tales of the Abyss sets up in a typical RPG fashion with you assuming the role of a sheltered kidnapped amnesiac aristocratic heir who is thrust into the outside world to fend for himself. You must navigate an unfamiliar world, awkwardly discern friends from foes, and ultimately save the world.
This latest edition to the tales franchise will sport real-time battles with a full 6-character party, and 4-player simultaneous gameplay action via multi-tap. You'll also be able to customize your A.I. for the CPU controlled characters in your party. Customization options include setting the frequency of attacks, item usage, targeting foes, and Over Limit Mode attacks.
For those uninitiated into the Tales world, Over Limit Mode is a reoccurring mode in the Tales franchise which allows you to execute chain combo attacks and special critical hit attacks.
New to the Tales world is the magical element called Fonon particles, which are very similar to our real world electrons; however, Fonon particles are magical elemental based particles that can be used to bind elemental attacks and defenses onto weapons and armor.
Tales of the Abyss will also sport an all new Flexible Motion Battle System which will allow you to free roam while engaged in battle for even more tactical flexibility by holding L2. This allows for different types of attacks and movements that are completely new to the Tales series, such as sneaky stealth attacks. There are also tech points that allow characters to use magic, target characters, and release the aforementioned elemental attacks that utilize, well, natural elements including water, fire, and air. Yes, even dangerous air.
With anime cut scenes produced by Studio Production I.G. (Evangelion: Death and Rebirth, FLCL, Ghost in the Shell), and all the new additions to the already solid Tales series, Tales of the Abyss will definitely be a RPG game to check out on the PS2 this coming Fall season.
