First Look: DoA2 Goes Hardcore (Page 2)

Old and New
While DoA2: Hardcore won't be an online title, you will have the ability to sign on and create your own user profile that will record your best times, win/loss record, and how you beat the folks you've faced before. This way you can show your opponents just how much of a badass you are. If that's not enough, you'll also be able to record and edit replays of your matches, and give prospective foes an idea of just how badly you're gonna beat 'em. If you've ever had a super-duper-combo-of-death, or even just an extremely well-timed reversal that won a tight match, you can save them and replay them 'til your heart's content.

If the graphical tweaks and new record-keeping stuff don't do it for you, you'll also have tons of hidden extras to unlock. Beat the game with every character and you'll find yourself the proud new owner of a playable Bayman, the badass brawler from the original Dead or Alive. If you're truly hardcore, you'll eventually be able to unlock one of the "cheapest" bosses in recent memory. That's right, the Tengu becomes playable in Hardcore, much to the chagrin of your opponents.

Tecmo has also added four new levels to the PS2 version (two of which appeared in the Japanese version), and they all have new surprises, such as hidden breakthrough areas, that no other version has had before. Your Tag Battles won't have to take place in that same old arena every time anymore: Tecmo has thrown in a bunch of new Tag arenas to give those battles a change of pace. You moves-mongers will find tons of new tag-team combos for punishing your foes, and some characters have new combos and maneuvers, just to keep the action fresh. For those DoA trivia fans, the original Gen-Fu and Lei Fang levels from the Dead or Alive arcade machine are back in full PS2 style, with exploding danger zones that are sure to bring back the old-school DoA nostalgia.

Look To The Future
In an age of mindless ports and me-too sequels, Tecmo is going the extra mile to bring you enough extras to make sure that Dead Or Alive 2: Hardcore is worth a look. Check out these screenshots and movies, and keep an eye on GamePro.com for more specifics on this new version of an already great game.
