First Look: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
Oh my, the thought of those poor little hobbits being manhandled by Saruman?s Uruk Hai is just too much to bear! But what can I do? All I?ve got is a PS2 controller and a lot of free time...
EA?s presentation of The Two Towers at E3 made a lot of people stop in their tracks and gape, slack-jawed, as the movie trailer seamlessly morphed itself into game footage and back again. The game clips were simply astounding. They truly looked as though they?d been lifted right out of the film.
In the PS2 version of The Two Towers, players will act as Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli through 13 missions that are based on major events in the first two LOTR films. But put yer thinking caps on for a minute, while you get the break down on a few oddities. Oddity #1: The Two Towers is EA?s first game based on the movies, so it is incorporating scenes from Fellowship to fill it out. Oddity #2: The GBA version adds Gandalf and Frodo to the mix, giving it more playable characters than the PS2 version. Not bad for a handheld... Oddity #3: Universal still has the original book license, so Universal Interactive will be releasing its own LOTR games this fall. Oddity #4: The Two Towers will be available on the PS2 before the film hits the theaters. You can start lining up any time you like...
Oddities aside, this title has the potential to do for games what Fellowship did for movies; i.e. change the way you look at them. They?ve got the visual style down, and they?re using an Academy-Award-winning musical score. But all this stands for naught without the ever-important gameplay. The dry description is "third person action/adventure with an emphasis on tactical sword fighting." Here?s to hoping that translates into a gut-wrenching, heart-pounding, controller-clutching experience that brings Tolkein?s fantastic imagination to life.
