Deus Ex: The Conspiracy

One of the best, most wide-open FPS games ever made for the PC is coming to the PS2, with a few tweaks for the console-minded.

How do you cram an entire mouse and keyboard into a PS2 controller without trashing the all-important gameplay? Just ask Warren Spector and his Deus Ex design team. Amazingly enough, they did not have to sacrifice any of the game?s complexity in bringing DX to the PS2. The nested menus that enable the PS2?s functionality may even prove to be more intuitive than the PC controls.

Deus Ex: The Conspiracy is shaping up to be one of those titles that raises the collective bar in console gaming. DX is pushing the limit of immersion with multifaceted level design and incredibly malleable storylines. There is no one right way to complete the game. Instead there are several endgames that are dependent on your character and style of play, and even variance from the PC level design to ensure that anyone who played the game there will want to come back for more.

Paper and pencil role players will feel right at home among DX?s skill point distributions and nanotech enhancements. Amidst the gaming industry?s perpetual exaltation of pixel shading and polygon counts, it?s refreshing to see a game that explores the medium?s potential for complex narrative. Oh, and they?ve bumped up the polygon count in almost every character model and object in the game.
