Hands-On: Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
Sony?s bettin? that Jak and Daxter will be the next big mascots for the PlayStation name. So far, Sony could be right.
A Band-icoot of Brothers?
Promised by Sony to be one of the biggest adventures for the PlayStation 2 yet, Jak and Daxter is so far living up to the prediction?even though its gameplay style suspiciously resembles Naughty Dog?s previous endeavor, Crash Bandicoot. In the preview build, Jak moved with fluidity in a typical 3D-platform world. Like Crash's, Jak?s attacks ranged from a spinning-whirlwind move to a double-jump pounding. Plus, throughout the world, you had to collect a certain number of orbs and power-ups to continue your quest?objectives also found in previous Crash games. Even the straightforward vehicle rides felt like d?j? vu.
Aside from the similarities of everyone?s favorite Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter did show off some spectacular visual effects. The humongous world could be seen from wherever you stood?so if you saw a mountaintop in the far distance, you could actually head over there and climb it. Character animations were smooth, and the amount of detail on each level was breathtaking. Picturesque villages, vivacious creatures, and colorful worlds rounded out an amazing graphical package. And with so much to see, you?ll forget that there?s hardly any loading time, even when you?re moving from level to level.
Jak in the Box
Jak and Daxter?s whimsical story will catapult you into an imaginative world. Jak?s best friend, Daxter, is turned into a weasel-like rodent after falling into a vat of Dark Eco. As Jak, you'll seek the advice of an elder mage, who suggests that you find the only person who can transform Daxter back to his original form. You?ll journey through an entire island full of mystery and sometimes-complicated tests. But don?t expect the usual jump-n-hit tactics like those of other adventures. Naughty Dog is committed to giving players a challenge: For instance, how well you play will determine how challenging the game will be; the better you are, the less hints you?ll receive and enemies may attack faster or slower.
With already a lot to offer in an early version, Jak and Daxter could be the next loveable mascots that the PlayStation 2 sorely needs.
